Of special interest are exhibits on the building of the aqueducts to bring water from the volcanic slopes to the central deserts of Maui. There are also artifacts from the various nationalities brought in to cut the sugar cane. Scale models of sugar factories and plantation houses as well as a collection of sugar tools are exhibited.

Iao Valley State Park and Pu'u Kukui Crater

Iao Valley (iao is sometimes translated as "highest cloud" or "highest light") lies west of Wailuku on road 32, the continuation of Main Street, and used to be one of the old Hawaiian holy valleys. Hawaiians would undertake pilgrimages to such places in honor of their gods.
Today, several well-maintained paths lead from the car park to this beautiful valley. It is a popular place for excursions.

Iao Valley State Park - Iao Needle

In the middle of the valley stands Iao Needle, a pointed lump of basalt, reaching 2215ft/675m above sea level - a monolith standing alone in the eroded valley.
This unique overgrown rock was apparently used as an altar in prehistoric times. A legend surrounds Iao Needle's origin. It is said that the demi-god Maui took captive an unwanted suitor (the water sprite Puukamoua, comparable to Triton, son of the Greek god Poseidon) of his beautiful daughter, Iao, and wanted to kill him. But Pele, the fire goddess, ordered Maui to turn him to stone - hence the needle!
The valley is said to be full of manas - the ghosts of Hawaiian gods.

Pali Ele'ele

Pali Ele'ele (a dark black cliff) will be passed on the left-hand side of the path to Iao Needle. In the 1960s, after the murder of President John F. Kennedy, it was thought that his profile could be seen in the cliffs.

Tropical Gardens of Maui

The four-acre Tropical Gardens of Maui is at the entrance of Iao Valley. The collection includes native Hawaiian plants, some rare and endangered, plus other tropical plants from around the world. A self-guided tour leads through the hills, past the koi pond and palm grotto into the taro patches.
