Upper Austria Attractions

The province of Upper Austria extends from the Dachstein massif to the Bohemian Forest (Böhmerwald) and from the Inn to the Enns, bounded on the west by the Federal Republic of Germany (Bavaria), on the north by the Czech Republic (Bohemia), on the east by Lower Austria, on the south by Styria and on the southwest by Salzburg province.

Danube Valley
A very different pattern is presented by the second of the province's main regions, the Danube valley. The river, already mighty and navigable when it enters Upper Austria from Bavaria, flows through the province for a distance of some 155km/95mi. Between Passau and Linz it is constricted within a narrow valley, which opens out beyond Linz; the river then continues through the densely populated Strudengau to the boundary of Lower Austria.

Upper Austria is rich in interesting natural features. The most notable among the caves of the region are the famous Dachstein Caves (the Giant Ice Cave and the Mammoth Cave). There are also a whole series of picturesque defiles and gorges, including the Burgauklamm at the southern end of the Attersee, the Gosauzwang near Hallstatt, the Koppenschlucht at Obertraun, the impressive gorge on the Steyr at Klaus, the Trattenbachfall near Spital am Pyhrn, the Traunfall at Gmunden, the Vogelsangklamm at Spital am Pyhrn and the Waldbachstrub near Hallstatt.

Along the line of an old geological fault lie several spas with mineral springs which are used for curative purposes - Bad Schallerbach (sulfur springs), Bad Hall (brine springs containing iodine and bromine, used in the treatment of eye conditions), Gallspach, Neydharting (peat baths), Weinberg (chalybeate spring) and Gmös (peat baths).
