Syracuse was founded in 1805, and it provided most of the salt to the United States for many years. Today it is home to numerous cultural and recreational activities.
The 1850 Weigh Building, the only remaining structure of its kind in the world, houses the Erie Canal Museum. It was designed to weigh canal boats and collect tolls at the confluence of the Erie and Oswego canals.
Exhibits in the Erie Canal Museum include a full size replica of an Erie Canal line boat, a collection of postcards, the Syracuse room, and a pottery display.

The Everson Museum of Art began in 1968 as the Syracuse Museum of Fine Arts. American paintings and sculpture from Colonial times to present day are on display as well as a large collection of ceramic art.

Landmark Theatre was designed by Thomas W. Lamb and built in 1928. It was named Loew's State Theatre and offered stage acts and moving pictures. It remained popular through to the 1950's when attendance began dropping, it was saved from the wrecking ball in 1977 and continues to thrive today.
Over 10,000 items on display that take the visitor through the history of the car and auto making. Oil paintings, photographs, racing memorabilia, dealership and roadside signs, colorful pedal cars, showroom posters and several presidential-car license plates.
The Onondaga Historical Association Museum houses over 300 years of history through photos, paintings, maps and rare artifact displays. The lobby has an exhibit dedicated to the Franklin automobile company, the East gallery features an exhibit that offers a glimpse into the anti-slavery movement and Underground Railroad in Syracuse.

Onondaga Lake Park has five miles of shoreline, tram rides, a marina and boat launch. The Salt Museum, located in the park contains a replica salt boiling block and other artifacts.

Sainte Marie among the Iroquois allows visitors to experience life from 1656-1658 at this recreated mission. Sainte Marie mission was built by Frenchmen, who had been invited to the area by the Iroquois people. Explore a life size Native fishing hut, and the ocean voyages taken by the Europeans through this living history museum.
