The city of Superior is one of the busiest bulk cargo ports in the United States. It is located on the Shores of Lake Superior and has done a good job of highlighting some of the waterfront areas. The city is blessed with a variety of museums and cultural offerings. Those interested in ships will find themselves with much to see and a wide variety of them ply the waters to and from Superior.
The large Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center is an excellent resource to the traveler visiting the region. The center features interactive displays, a boardwalk trail, and even a five-story lookout tower.

Fort Folle Avoine Historic Park recreates an Indian trading post from the early 19th Century. Log buildings and representations of the trading process are all on display in the exact locations of the original buildings. The Fort Folle Avoine Historic Park is spread out over 80 acres of woodland and tours take 2 hours.

The 42 room Fairlawn Mansion & Museum is housed in a large home built at the turn of the 20th Century. It is furnished in period pieces and the life and times of the owner, Martin Palison is explained. The home sits on a beautiful piece of property and has nice views out over the lake.

The SS Meteor Maritime Museum located on Baker's Island near Superior contains the sole remaining whaleback ship in the world. Tours of the ship are available and visit the pilot house, crew and captains quarters, galley, and engine room. The SS Meteor was designed and built by Captain Alexander McDougall.

Located in Shell, the Museum of Woodcarving highlights the skill of one artisan as he transformed chunks of wood into biblical art. Considered the largest collection of woodworking in the world done by one man, this attraction is worth a quick look. There are over 100 life-size figures along with 400 miniature ones.
