Stoke-on-Trent Attractions

Stoke-on-Trent (15mi/24km northwest of Derby), a conurbation created in 1910 by the amalgamation of six towns, lies at the heart of the Potteries, the area where Britain's ceramics industry is based. Many internationally famous porcelain manufacturers, including Wedgwood, Royal Doulton and Spode, have their roots here. Several companies offer factory tours; visitors can watch British porcelain being made using traditional as well as modern methods.
Stoke-on-Trent has many museums and galleries including the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, the Etruria Industrial Museum and Trentham Gardens.
Museum & Art Gallery
Opened in 1981, the Stoke-on-Trent City Museum and adjoining Art Gallery (in Bethesda Street, Hanley) possess what must be one of the finest collections of English pottery and ceramics to be seen anywhere.

Chatterley Whitfield Mining Museum
The 1,000ft/300m-deep galleries of the Chatterley Whitfield Mining Museum offer a fascinating insight into the harsh realities of coal mining. British Coal's national collection of mining artifacts is also housed in the museum. The combined effects of geological problems, declining demand and cheap foreign competition closed the pit in 1977, even though its high grade anthracite was some of the best in Britain.
