In St Johnsbury, the largest township in rural north-eastern Vermont, the famous Vermont maple syrup can be bought from the factory. The Fairbanks Museum of Natural Sciences and Planetarium offers visitors an excursion into the natural history of Vermont - and the universe. St Johnsbury Athenaem is a gem, with superlative wood panels; also a display of photographs by Albert Bierstadt.

St Johnsbury (pop. 8,000), is located in the area of Vermont known as the Northeast Kingdom. The town is the industrial and cultural center of this area.
