Southern Rhone Region Attractions

Some grape varieties found in the south were introduced into the Southern Rhône Region from Spain during the Middle Ages.

The area is extremely popular with tourists who enjoy its sunny, warm climate and beautiful landscapes.
Coteaux du Tricastin
The Coteaux du Tricastin is the most northerly district within the Southern Rhone region. It is situated east of the Rhone River, between Donzère and Bollène. Its landscape features low lying hills and extensive plateaus. This region is also famous for its truffles, a type of mushroom that grows underground near oak trees.

Important producers in the Coteaux du Tricastin district include: Domaine de la Tour l'Elysée located in Les Granges-Gontardes, and Domaine de Grangeneurve, a family estate in Roussas.
Sablet, France
Sablet is one of 12 villages awarded the distinction of Côtes du Rhône-Villages. It is built on the slope of a hill and features old fortification remains (walls, towers and gates). On the top of the hill is a small church.

Seguret, France
The medieval village of Séguret has been declared a historic monument. It is one of 12 villages awarded the distinction of Côtes du Rhône-Villages.

Highlights of the village include the Reynier gate, the 14th century belfry, the 10th century Saint-Denis church, the Rue des Poternes lined with ancient houses, and the Huguenots' gate.
St Restitut, France
The village of St-Restitut in the Southern Rhône region features the largest natural cave cellar in France. It is owned by the Cellier des Dauphins, bottlers and négociants (merchants).

Visan, France
Visan is one of 12 villages awarded the distinction of Côtes du Rhône-Villages. The village is fortified and has castle ruins. Each year at the end of August or beginning of September a pilgrimage is made to the 13th century chapel of Notre-Dame-des-Vignes. Inside the chapel on the chancel arch there is an inscription reading: "Posuerunt me custodem in vineis", ("I have been placed here as the guardian of the vines").
