The southern part of Honduras narrows to touch the Pacific Ocean. In the natural harbor leading into the Golfa de Fonseca is the once-volcanic Isla El Tigre (Tiger Island). Travelers in this part of Honduras are usually on route to El Salvador or Nicaragua although the colonial city of Choluteca is an alternative destination.
The fourth largest city in the country, and the only major one on the Pan-American Highway, Choluteca offers a well-preserved colonial downtown area with attractive buildings and cobblestone streets. The hot and dry climate in this bustling commercial city of 92,400 is the hottest in Honduras.
This 783m/2568ft high volcanic island in the Golfo de Fonseca is home to the quiet fishing village of Amapala. Once the main Honduran port in the Pacific the architecture of Amapala's main buildings reveal the character of the town's past.
A road that rings the island provides access to the different beaches on the island. Playa Grande and Playa Negra are the most popular. A road leads to the top of the conical extinct volcano where views of the Golf of Fonseca are enjoyed.
