Shaoxing is situated in the north of the Zhejiang province.
Shaoxing lies in a picturesque landscape between the Mirror Lake and the Kuaijishan Mountain. A network of small canals, bridges and whitewashed buildings make their impression on the lovely townscape.
Silk and tea production has been a long-standing tradition.
The history of Shaoxing began over 400 years ago. Its origins go back to a legend about Yu the Great, a heroic figure who harnessed several rivers and founded the Xia dynasty (2116 C BC). According to this legend Yu was laid to rest at the foot of the Kuaijishan Mountain.
In the Spring and Autumn Period (770-467 BC) the city was called Yue and was the capital of the empire of the same name. During the following centuries many artists and scholars were either born or chose to live in the city. The famous calligrapher Wang Xizhi (321-379) lived here for a long while; the celebrated writers Lu You (1125-1210), Qiu Jin (1875-1907) and Lu Xun (1881-1938) were all born in Shaoxing.

Birthplace of Lu Xun Guju
This two-story wooden house, with a garden in Lu Xun Lu street in the city center, is where Lu Xun lived from his birth in 1881 until 1899 and then again from 1910 until 1912 when he taught at the teacher training institute here.
To the east of the house is the Studio of the Three Perfumes (Sanwei Shuwu), a kind of private school which the author attended from 1892-97. The original furnishings still remain, including the desk used by Lu Xun.

Dashansi Ta Pagoda
The 40m/131ft high Dashansi Ta Pagoda in the city center, dating from the year 504, has been restored several times.
Nearby stands the Memorial to Qiu Jin, who was executed here after she had organized an uprising against the Qing that was unsuccessful.

Lu Xun Exhibition Hall
In the Lu Xun Exhibition Hall (Lu Xun Jinianhuan), near the birthplace of Lu Xun, photographs, letters and works by the author are displayed. The Xianheng Jiudian, where a famous story by Lu Xun takes place, has been reconstructed.
Residence of Qiu Jin
In the south of the city is the former residence of Qiu Jin (Qiu Jin Guju). The house has been furnished as a memorial, where the life of the poet has been recorded in photographs and documents.

Orchid Pavilion (Lanting Pavilion)
The Orchid Pavilion lies on the edge of a small lake, with surrounding bamboo woods. It has stood here since at least the 4th C.
Mirror Lake
In 140 the prefect of Shaoxing at that time had the Mirror Lake excavated 1.5km/1mi to the south of the city and let 36 rivers from the surrounding area flow into it. Since then the lake has been made famous by many literary figures. Today the lovely scenery can still be enjoyed.
