To the north of the Warscheneck group stretches the long, lonely ridge of the Sengsengebirge, with the Hoher Nock (1,961m/6,434ft), which belongs to the broad Pre-Alpine zone to the north rather than to the Totes Gebirge.
Klaus is located on the Steyr River at the foot of the Sengsengebrige mountains. The Summer of Music is an annual festival that runs here from July to August.

From Liezen a road crosses the Pyhrn pass (945m/3,101ft) to the resort of Spital am Pyhrn (647m/2,123ft; pop. 2,500), 16km/10mi to the northeast, with a fine Baroque church and a rockscape museum. On a crag above the little town stands the Late Gothic church of St Leonard.

From the St Leonard church in Spital am Pyhrn it is a one and a half hour's walk to the beautiful Dr. Vogelsang-Klamm (gorge) and another two and three-quarter hours to the Rohrauer Haus (1,348m/4,423ft; overnight accommodation), from which it is a four and a half hours' climb to the summit of the Grosser Pyhrgas (2,244m/7,363ft). 4km/2.5mi southwest of Spital lies the lower station (806m/2,644ft) of the cableway to the Wurzeralm (1,426m/4,679ft), popular both with summer visitors and winter sports enthusiasts.
