Lauenburg, Germany
Lauenburg, the most southerly town in Schleswig-Holstein, lies on the high north bank of the Elbe. In Elbstrasse, in the old lower town, are a number of handsome 16th and 17th C half-timbered houses; at No. 59 is the Elbe Shipping Museum. The church of Mary Magdalene was built in 1227 but was much altered in later centuries. The south doorway dates from 1598. On the Schlossberg (fine views) is the Schlossturm, a relic of the old castle of the Dukes of Saxony-Lauenburg.

Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park
(Near Lauenburg)
To the east of the Elbe-Lübeck Canal, between Gross-Grönau in the north and Büchen in the south, extends the Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park, a region of forests and lakes covering some 400 sq. km/155 sq. mi.

With more than 40 lakes, the area is a paradise for water sports enthusiasts, offering endless scope for bathing, sailing and rowing.
Ratzeburg
(Near Lauenburg)
From Lübeck there are motor-launch services up the river Wakenitz to the long Ratzeburger See. On an island in the lake is Ratzeburg, once the seat of the Dukes of Lauenburg.

At the north end of the old town, which is linked with the mainland by three causeways, stands the magnificent Cathedral (Dom; 12th-13th C.), which ranks after Lübeck Cathedral as one of the oldest Romanesque buildings in brick. Adjoining is the Stiftsgebäude (13th C.), with wall paintings in the cloister.

In the Domhof are the District Museum (local history, uniforms and weapons) and the Andreas-Paul-Weber-Haus, with lithographs by the artist of that name (1893-1980). In Barlachplatz is the Ernst Barlach Museum (sculpture, drawings, woodcuts).
