The mining town of Røros, situated on both banks of the Hitterelv, was founded in 1644 after the discovery of large deposits of copper ore in the surrounding area, and during the 17th century many German miners were brought in to work here. The town, now on UNESCO's World Heritage List, attracts many visitors in summer.
The town was destroyed by Swedish troops in 1679 and then completely rebuilt. There are still 80 wooden houses with the dark pitch-log facades, which gives the town a medieval appearance.
Miners' Houses
The old houses of Røros, excellently restored, preserve something of the aspect of this old mining town in past centuries. In Slaggveg can be seen a row of miners' houses up to 250 years old. The more prosperous inhabitants of the town lived in the main street, Bergmannsgate. The size and furnishings of the houses give clear evidence of sharp class distinctions.
Aasengård
In the center of Røros is its oldest surviving building, the Aasengård. The site of the house was cleared in the 17th century by Hans Olsen Aasen, who discovered the first copper ore in this area. The house can be seen by arrangement with the tourist office.

The mining company failed in the late 1970s as a result of economic difficulties.
