Rio Grande do Sul State
Rio Grande do Sul is the most southerly state in Brazil. It lies on the southern descent from the Brazilian Highlands, bordered on the north-east by Santa Catarina, on the south by Uruguay and on the south, beyond the Rio Uruguai, by Argentina. A distinctive feature of the landscape pattern is the series of huge lagoons running parallel to the coast such as the Lagoa dos Patos ("Duck Lagoon"), which is some 250km/155mi long and up to 60km/37mi across.
Economy
The state was given its distinctive stamp - still readily recognizable today - by the large number of German immigrants, whose descendants still account for just under a third of the population. They developed the region's flourishing agriculture (grain, soya beans, tobacco and other crops). It also has minerals (coal, copper, iron, precious stones).
