Pennsylvania - Valleys of the Susquehanna Attractions

Clyde Peeling's Reptiland has more than forty species from around the world displayed in natural habitats. Explore the world of mambas, cobras, vipers, pythons and other rare and beautiful snakes. Giant alligators, gentle tortoises, curious lizards and colorful frogs also await discovery on this zoological adventure.

Berwick was a religious refuge, founded in 1786 by Quaker Evan Owens. It was named for Berwick-upon-Tweed, an English town. It is now an industrial community that offers cultural and recreational opportunities..

The Susquehanna Energy Information Center is located down the hill from the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station. Interactive displays, hands-on exhibits, educational programs, and plant tours are available. Visitors learn about nuclear power and the operation of a nuclear plant.

Penn's Cave is the only American all-water cavern and is toured by motorboat. Visitors will experience limestone corridors, stalagmites, stalactites, and flowstone cascades. A tour of Penn's Cave Farms with natural habitat for numerous North American animals is also available.

Montour Preserve is located on Lake Chillisquaque. It is a nature preserve and recreation area. There are 4 marked nature trails and the visitor center features nature, wildlife and history exhibits.

Knoebels Amusement Resort has been owned and operated by the Knoebel family since 1926. The numerous rides and attractions include roller coasters, carousel, bumper cars and boats, and water slides.

Located in a scenic region, Lewistown is near Lewistown Narrows, the Stone Arch Bridge and the Seven Mountain District.

Curtin Village features an 1830 restored mansion. The 30,000 acres provided food for the entire community and the village became self sufficient until the ironworks closed in 1921.

The Old Mill Village Museum is located along the Endless Mountains Heritage Trail. The village consists of 34 acres and numerous historic buildings from the 19th century. Exhibits at the Old Mill include historical artifacts found within the Blacksmith Shop, Dress Shop, Gunsmith Shop and Post Office.

One of the highlights is the Beehive Oven, an outdoor bread baking oven, where visitors can learn about how bread was baked and taste the results!

Joseph Preistley was an English theologian, scientist, natural philosopher, teacher, linguist, and historian. This rural Georgian manor home was built in 1794 and houses what may be the first scientific research laboratory in the United States. It was in this laboratory, designed by Priestley, where carbon monoxide was first described. The home is furnished with authentic period objects, as well as exhibits presenting Priestley's accomplishments and varied interests.

Penns Creek is named for the creek that flows nearby. The Penns Creek Massacre occurred nearby in 1755 when American Indians killed or captured 26 settlers.

Ricketts Glen has a series of wild, free-flowing waterfalls. Old growth timber and a diversity of wildlife add to the scenic area. Many recreational opportunities are available.

Pennsylvania State University, founded as an agricultural college in 1855, is located in State College.

The Mansion was the ironmaster's residence from 1842-1891. It has been restored and is furnished to reflect the period of residency of ironmaster Moses Thompson and his family.

Sunbury was the site of the largest frontier fort, Fort Augusta. The powder magazine from 1756 still stands today.

Thomas Edison built the first three-wire central station in 1883 in Sunbury.

Hunter House is located on the site of historic Fort Augusta. The owners purchased the land from the Indians in 1768 and the present house was built in 1848. Permanent exhibits include prehistoric and historic items that are significant to the site.

Woodward is one of the state's largest caverns and features guided tours of five rooms. The five rooms are the Ball Room, Square Room, Hanging Forest, Hall of Statues and Upper Room.
