Pennsylvania - Pocono Mountains Attractions

Over 40 automobiles are on display including names like Auburn, Buick, Cadillac, Cord, DeSoto, Ford, Franklin, Graham-Paige, Hudson, Locomobile, Marmon, Packard, Peerless, Studebaker, Stutz, and Wills Sainte Claire. Motorcycles and thirty large scale airplane models are also on display.

Ashland was established in 1847 and is an old mining community.

Tools, machinery, models, photographs and graphic displays explain mining and more details on anthracite. The day-to-day work of the miner working underground is the focus of the museum.

Pioneer Tunnel is a horizontal drift mine that runs 1800 feet straight into the side of the Mahanoy Mountain. The Tunnel offers visitors an opportunity to learn how anthracite coal is mined. Visitors can ride into the Tunnel on mining cars that were rebuilt to carry passengers.

The Tioga Point Museum collection includes Native American artifacts, Victorian items, toys, minerals, tools, household items, animal specimens, and local history exhibits.

Bushkill is a popular area of the Poconos for white water rafting, canoeing, and camping. Public trout fly fishing can be found along six miles of the Big Bushkill Creek.

The Pocono Indian Museum is dedicated to the history of the Delaware Indians through displays of ancient artifacts. An Indian bark house and pottery dating back over 1,000 years ago is on display.

Bushkill Falls consists of a series of eight waterfalls within the Pocono Mountains. Hiking trails and bridges offer views of the falls and the surrounding forest.

Eckley Miners' Village is a 19th century anthracite mining village that serves a living history museum. Exhibits, pictures and slide shows depict life for the miners and their families in this company owned village.

Hawk Mountain Sanctuary was established in 1934, as the world's first refuge for raptors. Located on Blue Mountain, birdwatching and hiking opportunities are available. Over 2,400 acres of forested Appalachian mountaintop is found in this National Historic Landmark.

Forty Fort was built by the first 40 Connecticut settlers. It was organized as a borough in 1887.

The oldest house in Forty Fort, built in 1790 by Nathan Denison - a Revolutionary War colonel. American lifestyles, furniture and architecture in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries are featured.

One of two Pennsylvania towns called Hamlin, this one is east of Scranton.

One hundred and twenty species of exotic animals are housed in a wooded setting at the Claws 'n' Paws Wild Animal Park. Other exhibits include a petting zoo, farmyard animals, and birds of prey.

Greater Hazleton offers outdoor recreational opportunities ranging from hunting and fishing, to cross country skiing and whitewater rafting.

Exhibits at Greater Hazleton Historical Society Museum include mining tools, photographs, and rescue apparatus; American Indian artifacts; historic dress; antique toys; and items from kitchens of the past.

Honesdale was established in 1828 as a terminal for canal barges carrying coal to New York markets. It was also the site of the first use of a commercial steam train.

The history of the Delaware Hudson Canal 1828-1898 exhibit at Wayne County Historical Society features the Stourbridge Lion, the first locomotive to turn wheel on commercial track. Faces in Clay is Vernon Leslie's 4,600 piece archeology collection that interprets the Native American history of the upper Delaware River Valley.

Author Zane Grey lived in Lackawaxen from 1905 until 1918. Exhibits include photographs, books and personal belongings of Zane and his wife.

This restored gristmill was built in the early 1800s. It is powered by a three-story water wheel. In 1881, the mill was destroyed by fire and was rebuilt in 1882.

There are hundreds of viewpoints at and near Mount Pocono that provide a view of the Delaware Water Gap.

Pocono Knob is a scenic overlook providing many panoramic viewpoints of the region.

John Pott, a pioneer ironworker built a small iron furnace on this site in 1806 thus the name - Pottsville.

Automobiles and related memorabilia from the 50s and 60s are on display at Jerry's Classic Cars. A barber shop, soda fountain and automobile parts store are also on display.

Attraction permanently closed in Spring 2009.

Shawnee Place Play & Water Park has over 15 outdoor play activities including the cloud bounces, ball crawls, a cable glide, tunnels of fun, play center, hands-over-water, swinging bridges, a tube slide, a slab slide and a giant sand box.

Stonehedge Gardens is seven acres of herb, hosta, water, perennial and tropical spice gardens.

Camelbeach Waterpark includes water slides, river ride, swimming pool, miniature golf and bumper boats in its various attractions. Nearby Camelback Mountain allows for snowtubing, skiing, and snowboarding in the winter.

Towanda was the boyhood home of Stephen Collins Foster, composer.

Over 400 acres and over fifty structures were erected by a group of French exiles who settled here in the autumn of 1793. French Azilum has over 20 acres of the original settlement with Early Americana outbuildings and the 1836 Laporte House containing period furnishings. Guided tours and outdoor exhibits are also available.

Troy Farm Museum houses a collection of rare implements, tools and artifacts reflect 200 years of the agricultural heritage in this region. These items include hand tools, crop and food processing small tools and equipment, and large field equipment. Exhibits include early household, general store, tinsmith and blacksmith shops.

The Upper Delaware is the longest free-flowing river in the Northeast with Class I and II rapids located between placid pools and eddies. The habitat is perfect for wintering bald eagles, public fishing and boating is allowed. As well, The John Roebling's Delaware Aqueduct and the Zane Grey Museum in Lackawaxen are found nearby.

White Haven offers year-round recreation opportunities. White-water rafting is popular on Lehigh River during spring, summer, and fall.

The Dorflinger Glass Museum is a tribute to Christian Dorflinger. Christian purchased land in the 1860's and set up a glass factory to fine crystal and exquisite cut glass, which is known throughout the world.

Dorflinger-Suydam Wildlife Sanctuary began as a farm in 1851 and then became a respite for the Dorflinger family. The sanctuary provides nature trails to allow for observance of wildlife and waterfowls within the 600 acres.

Wilkes-Barre was named for John Wilkes and Isaac Barre, who were members of the British Parliament and Colonial sympathizers. Wilkes-Barre is home to the Luzerne County Historical Society, Coal Street Park, and the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts.

Sordoni Art Gallery offers a range of exhibitions by local, regional, national and international artists. Paintings, sculptures, watercolors, and photographs are featured. The gallery is located on the campus of Wilkes University.
