Peak District Attractions

With its attractive scenery the Peak District has always been a recreational area for the people of the surrounding industrial areas: the conurbation of Southeast Lancashire centered around Manchester, the towns of Sheffield and Derby and the English pottery industry based at Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Uttoxeter, England

The Uttoxeter May Festival takes place in the town's historic market place on each bank holiday Monday in May. The Flourish Festival in June features visual arts, drama, dance, music and food.
One of Uttoxeter's main attractions is a bas-relief depicting a scene in which Dr Johnson stood bareheaded in the rain in the market square to atone for his refusal to attend his father's bookstall in his youth.

Staffordshire Way

This 95-mile / 153-kilometer trail is a good way to see Staffordshire. The trail starts at Mow Cop on the rugged Congleton Edge, passing Rudyard Lane, along the Churnet Valley to Uttoxter, then goes across the Cannock Chase on to the Kinver Edge in the south of the county.

Croxden Abbey

Croxden Abbey is the remains of a Cistercian abbey dating from 1176.

Glossop, England

Glossop (pop. 25,339) is located near the Peak District National Park southeast of Manchester. Glossop has numerous annual events including Victorian Weekend, Bank Holiday Markets and several musical festivals.
Both Manor Park and Howard Park provide spectacular views of the surrounding countryside.

Ashbourne, England

Ashbourne is a small town located near the southwestern edge of the Peak District. There is an information center in the town and several campsites in the area. Tissington Trail in Ashbourne is a recreational walking and cycling path.

Old Manor

The Old Manor in Norbury is National Trust property on the Derby and Stafford border. It dates back to the 13th and 15th centuries and will appeal to architectural enthusiasts.

Ilam Park

Ilam Park spans both banks of the River Manifold. It is an area of park and woodland with spectacular views to Dovedale.

Sudbury, England

Sudbury has an interesting main street which has not changed for the past few hundred years. There are traditional houses and other period buildings. Sudbury Hall is the most impressive building, completed in the 17th century of red brick.

Matlock Bath - Heights of Abraham Country Park

A cable car takes visitors to the "Heights of Abraham" country park in Matlock Bath. Set in 60 acres of the Derbyshire Peak District, this attraction offers insight into England's industrial heritage.

Longshaw Estate

Longshaw Estate is located in the Peak District National Park. It is a wide expanse of open moorland,woodland and farms with excellent walking and views.

North Creake - Creake Abbey

Ruins of an Augustinian almshouse, later converted to an abbey.
