The name of this charming little old town, on the River Broye, has its origins with the Roman family Paterni. From the 10th C. the town has been the home of the Burgundian kings. The Benedictine monastery founded by Empress Adelheid, wife of Otto I, in 962 is an outstanding example of Cluny architecture.
Four 13-14th C. towers remain of the medieval town of Payerne. A fine Renaissance painting by H. Maraschet (1576) can be seen in the Late Gothic Law Court building (1571-1572) next to the parish church. Close by are the Banner Carrier's fountain and the fountain of Serruriers (16th C.).
Next to Payerne's Abbey church is the triple-naved Protestant parish church of Notre-Dame (14/16th C.). A wall-painting in the southern lateral aisle depicts The Shroud of Christ (16th C.).
