Nearly 2,000 islands make up the Thousand Islands along the St Lawrence River. This region features sailing, whitewater rafting, fishing, golf, tennis and hiking opportunities. Art museums, historic forts and the Boldt Castle are all found amongst the islands.

Sackets Harbor, New York
Sackets Harbor was the United States' most important shipbuilding center during the War of 1812. The headquarters for the U.S. Navy on the Great Lakes, it was home to thousands of shipwrights, carpenters, sailors, and soldiers gathered to construct, sail, and defend the fleet. During the War of 1812, one third of the United States Army, and a quarter of its Navy, were stationed at Sackets Harbor.
Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site
Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site highlights life after the war between the United States and Great Britain in 1812. Sackets Harbor was the center of American naval and military activity for the upper St. Lawrence Valley and Lake Ontario. The historic site features demonstrations of 1813 army camp life and a restored 1850s Navy Yard and Commandant's House.
Pickering-Beach Historical Museum
Life in Sackets Harbor during the 19th century is presented through the Pickering Cottage and the Pickering-Beach House. The Cottage was built in 1809 and the House was built circa 1817.
Canton, New York
Canton was settled in the early 1800s. It is the home of St. Lawrence University, a liberal arts institution that was founded in 1856. The Main Street is lined with restored, turn-of-the-century buildings. Remington Recreation Trail provides opportunity for walking, jogging, cycling, roller blading and cross country skiing.
St Lawrence County Museum
The St Lawrence County Museum is housed in the home of Silas Wright, U.S. senator and New York governor. It was built in 1833 and has been restored to the 1830-50 period. Exhibits include furniture belonging to the Wrights throughout the home and historical data on St. Lawrence county.
Clayton, New York
The Thousand Islands extend above and below Clayton on the St Lawrence River. The Thousand Islands craft school, located in Clayton, offers folk arts and crafts.Clayton has three museums - the Antique Boat Museum, the Handweaving Museum and Arts Center, and the Thousand Islands Museum.
Antique Boat Museum
The Antique Boat Museum in Clayton features a collection of boats such as an American Indian dugout, birch bark canoe, St Lawrence skiff, early 20th century speedboats, launches and pleasure craft. The Gold Cup Building houses a collection of racing boats including the legendary Dixie II, winner of more than 100 races.
Thousand Islands Museum
The Museum is housed in the Town Hall/Opera House built in 1903. A replica of the World Record Muskie is on exhibit along with the Best of Show Decoys. Exhibits include turn of the century life along the St Lawrence River.
Salmon River Fish Hatchery, Altmar, New York
The Salmon River Hatchery produces about 4 million trout and salmon each year. The hatchery began operating in 1981, to meet the stocking needs of Lake Erie, Ontario, Champlain and their tributaries.
Cape Vincent Historical Museum, Cape Vincent, New York
The Cape Vincent Historical Museum is located in a stone building that served as a barracks for soldiers during the War of 1812. Historical memorabilia relating to Cape Vincent's history is on display.
Stone Mills Museum, La Fargeville, New York
Stone Mills Museum features an 1837 meeting house, two-story jump-press, carriages, wagons, farm kitchen, and looms. The museum highlights the development of the agricultural industry in Northern New York.
Ogdensburg, New York
Ogdensburg, located on the banks of the St Lawrence River, was founded as the French Fort la Presentation in 1749. The Custom House, built 1809-10, is designated as the oldest federal government building in the U.S.
Frederic Remington Art Museum
Works by Frederic Remington on display include bronze sculptures, oil paintings, watercolors and pen and ink illustrations. His tools, personal notes and furnishings from his home complement his artwork.
Oswego, New York
The French, English and Americans fought over Oswego during the 1700s. It was strategically located at the mouth of the Oswego River on Lake Ontario. Firmly acquired by the US, it became a thriving port.
Fort Ontario State Historic Site
The first fort on this site was built by the British in 1755 but then destroyed by the French during the French and Indian War. Over many years it was destroyed and rebuilt during many battles and finally abandoned in 1901. Fort Ontario is being restored to its 1867-72 appearance. Costumed interpreters recreate the lives of the officers, men, and civilians who lived there in 1868-9.
H. Lee White Marine Museum
Exhibits at the H. Lee White Marine Museum represent over 300 years of Oswego and the Great Lakes history. Displays on two floors of the museum include nautical artifacts, navigation of Lake Ontario, model ships, and a restored American Indian canoe. A WWII U.S. Army LT-5 tugboat and Erie Canal barge can be toured.
Energy Center
Exhibits and multimedia presentations explain nuclear power generation as well as other energy sources.
Richardson-Bates House Museum
The Richardson-Bates House Museum has period rooms, permanent and changing exhibit galleries, 30,000 objects and photographs on display.
Potsdam, New York
Settled in 1803, within five years it had a population of 900. The Clarkson family ran a farm and other businesses, built Trinity Church and founded Thomas Clarkson Memorial College of Technology - now known as Clarkson University.
Gibson Gallery
Gibson Gallery is located in Brainerd Hall at the State of University of New York. Exhibits change on a regular basis featuring student as well as regional, national and international artists. Collections consists of significant American, European and Japanese works of art including painting, sculpture, works on paper, prints, ceramics, and photographs.
Potsdam Public Museum
Permanent exhibits at the Potsdam Public Museum includes the Burnap Collection of English pottery that dates from 1700-1870 as well as Delft chargers, Wedgewood, lusterware, and relief wares. Other displays include the history of Potsdam and the Knowles family.

Watertown saw the beginning for F W Woolworth, he began selling merchandise at a county fair in 1878. This saw the birth of the Woolworth chain.Fort Drum is also located in Watertown.
Jefferson County Historical Society Museum
The Jefferson County Historical Society Museum is housed in the Paddock Mansion, circa 1878. There are many items on display including Victorian furnishings, decorative art, American Indian artifacts, and Civil War memorabilia. The grounds feature a recreated Victorian garden and a carriage barn that contains antique cars and farm tools.

The Sci-Tech Center of Northern New York is a hands-on science museum featuring light, sound and electricity exhibits.

A 35 acre zoo, tennis and swimming facilities as well as a playground are featured within Thompson Park Conservancy.
Alexandria Bay, New York
Alexandria Bay has cultural and historical characteristics that are regularly maintained. Boldt Castle is located here as well as the Antique Boat Museum.
Boldt Castle
The castle was started in 1900 as a gift from George Boldt to his wife, Louise. Unfortunately, Louise died in 1904 and construction ceased at that time. The Thousand Islands Bridge Authority acquired the property in 1977 and began to restore and repair the property so as to open it to the public.
Empire Boat Lines
Narrated tours of the Thousand Islands and the area around Alex Bay are featured by Empire Boat Lines. Some of the sights include the shortest international bridge and Boldt Castle.
Minna Anthony Common Nature Center
The nature center is found within the Wellesley Island State Park. It is a 600 acre wildlife sanctuary with 8 miles of trails. The visitor center has nature exhibits and trails for cross-country skiing.
1000 Islands Skydeck
Three observation decks provide visitors with a view of the 1000 Islands and St Lawrence River.
Uncle Sam Boat Tours
Cruises of the Thousand Islands aboard double and triple-deck paddlewheelers are available. Lunch and dinner cruises are available during the summer.
Stone Barn Castle Farm Museum (closed), Cleveland, New York
Construction on Stone Barn Castle began in 1896. Built of stone, the castle houses farm machinery antiques, furniture, and ancient kitchen utensils.
Fulton, New York
Fulton was settled in the late 18th century by Dutch settlers. The Oswego Canal opened in the 1820s which boosted the economy in Fulton.
Massena, New York
The Bertrand Snell and Dwight D Eisenhower were built to overcome an 80 foot drop in the St Lawrence River. Massena is also home to the Moses-Saunders Power Dam.
Great Lakes-St Lawrence Seaway System
The original plan for a canal began in 1680 and was completed in 1824. It linked Lake St Louis and Montreal. The system was a joint venture between Canada and the United States that was completed in 1959. This marine highway stretches for 2,342 miles. It extends from Montreal to Lake Erie and includes the Montreal/Lake Ontario Section and the Welland Canal.
Moses-Saunders Power Dam
Jointly owned by the New York Power Authority and Ontario Power Generation, the Moses-Saunders Power Dam generates about two million kilowatts of electricity. The visitor center has exhibits that include a hand carved wooden map showing the voyages of Jacques Cartier, film presentation and computerized display that explains how electricity is produced and used.
Massena Museum
The Massena Museum details local history from 1802 to present. Some of the items on display include a hotel book signed by President Chester A Arthur in 1882, two handmade hearses from the early 1900s and Victorian furnishings.
