Central-Leatherstocking, New York State Attractions

This Central-Leatherstocking region features the halls of fame for baseball, boxing and soccer. There are many historic sites throughout the region, and underground wonders to be found at Howe Caverns or the Secret Caverns.

New York State - Adirondack Park

Adirondack Park, was created in 1882 and contains over 6 million acres of private and state land in upstate New York. Some of the physical features of the park include mountains, sheer cliffs, beaver meadows, swamps and grassy plain. The area is being preserved for recreational activities that include: bird-watching, fishing, boating, horseback riding, skiing and camping. The visitor centers have indoor and outdoor exhibits as well as a surfaced trail system with interpretive signs.

National Shrine of North American Martyrs, Auriesville, New York

The Shrine is located on the site of the Mohawk Village of Ossernenon. Father Isaac Jogue and his companions were killed here in the 1640s. They were later canonized Martyrs: St. Rene Goupil (1642), Jesuit brother: St. Isaac Jogues (1646), Jesuit priest: and St. John Lalande (1646), lay missioner. This is also the birthplace of the Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha, the Lily of the Mohawks.

Boonville, New York

The town was named for Garret Boon, an agent of the Holland Land Co. The company owned land in the area at the end of the 18th century. Prosperity came to the town in the mid-1800s due to the Black River Canal and Railroad.
Boonville offers fishing, hunting, swimming, skiing, snowmobiling, camping, golf, and tennis opportunities.

Dodge-Pratt-Northam Art & Community Center

Built in 1875 by Clark Dodge, a merchant and one of the founders of the First National Bank. His son sold the house to Charles W. Pratt in 1894. It was then left to Hazel Northam, who died in 1972 and willed the house to the Erwin Library.

Canajoharie, New York

The name comes from an American Indian expression meaning "the washed pot". The pot refers to a large pothole in the nearby Canajoharie Creek Gorge. The Dutch and Germans settled the area in the early 1700s.
The Canajoharie Library and Art Gallery houses 350 works of art that began with a collection from Bartlett Arkell, founder of the Beech-Nut Company.

Canajoharie Library and Art Gallery

The Canajoharie Library & Art Gallery contains watercolors and oil paintings by John Singleton Copley, Winslow Homer, George Inness and Gilbert Stuart as well as other American painters. Local history, including information about the Beech-Nut and Lifesavers companies is featured.

Canastota, New York

The village of Canastota was first settled in 1810 by Reuben Perkins, who purchased 329 and 1/2 acres of former Indian territory from New York State. The village was incorporated in 1835, when it was a booming Erie Canal town.
Canastota offers many leisure and recreational activities such as fishing, camping, hunting, boating, golf, skiing, and trail riding.

Canastota Canal Town Museum

The Canastota Canal Town Museum is located in an 1874 house, one of the oldest structures in the village. Exhibits of artifacts and authentic canal memorabilia are featured in the museum's collection. These include pictures, slides, books, cemetery files, news clippings, and local genealogy information.
Maps, dolls and samples of handmade crystal are also on display.

International Boxing Hall of Fame

Canastota has a legacy of boxing champions. The town decided to honor former welterweight and middleweight champion of the late-1950s, Carmen Basilio, and his nephew, Billy Backus, who won the world welterweight title in 1970. Displays of boxing memorabilia include robes, gloves, videotapes and ticket stubs.

Oneida, New York

Founded in 1848 by John Noyes, the Oneida community was a religious and social commune who called themselves the Perfectionists. That way of life ceased in 1881. Oneida Ltd, silverware manufacturer, has factories and home offices in the area and continues some of the cooperative features from the corporation formed many years ago.

Oneida Community Mansion House

The Oneida Community Mansion House was built in stages between 1861 and 1914 as the Oneida Community grew to more than 250 people. The 200 room mansion is built in popular architectural style of the mid-19th century. The Mansion House features a museum, 35 residential apartments, nine guestrooms, dining and meeting facilities.

Cottage Lawn Museum

Housed in "Cottage Lawn", a Gothic Revival mansion, the society offers exhibits on local history, a genealogical library and seven period rooms. An agricultural museum that has displays regarding hops can be found in the carriage barn.

Chittenango - Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum

The Chittenango Landing Canal Boat Museum was built on the site of the Merrell Soule Canning Company. The museum highlights the construction of cargo boats in the 19th and 20th century, provides archaeology programs and digs, walking tours, excavated canal boat remains and the workings of a restored dry dock.

Deposit Historical Museum, Deposit, New York

The Deposit Historical Museum has antique furniture, clothing, tools, artifacts, pictures, maps, scrapbooks, and biographical reviews on display. The focal point of Deposit Historical Museum is a restored teller's cage from the Farmers National Bank.

National Shrine of Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha and Native American Exhibit, Fonda, New York

The shrine is a tribute to Kateri, who was baptized by the Jesuits, but then ostracized by her people. The site includes 1663 Caughnawaga Indian village Mohawk, an excavated and staked out Iroquois village and an exhibit of American Indian artifacts.

Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site, Fort Hunter, New York

The Schoharie Crossing, a 3 mile nature trail is located in Fort Hunter, along the Erie Canal. Original pieces of the locks and arches from the Schoharie Aqueduct are preserved here. The Visitor Center traces the history of the canal and its impact on New York.

Little Falls, New York

The falls attracted settlers to the area and became a source of water power. Lock 17 is the largest lock on the Barge Canal. Historic Canal Place is an industrial area with two refurbished 19th century stone mill buildings. Antique and art galleries, shops, restaurants and a performing arts center are all part of the area.

Herkimer Home State Historic Site

This Georgian style mansion was the home of Revolutionary War hero, General Nicholas Herkimer. The house was built in 1764 and features historic furnishings, artifacts and memorabilia. A Colonial herb and vegetable garden is a found on the grounds.

Little Falls Historical Society Museum

The Little Falls Historical Society Museum features historical memorabilia, documents, maps, photographs, children's toys from the 19th and the early 20th Century, old seasonal greeting cards and a display of early wedding dresses.

Northeast Classic Car Museum, Norwich, New York

Northeast Classic Car Museum in Norwich has more than 100 restored cars that date from 1903 to the 1950s on display. The museum has the largest collection of Franklin luxury cars in the world. Other exhibits include WWII aircraft engines and period clothing.

Oneonta, New York

Located on the western edge of the Catskills, Oneonta is the Oneida Indian word for "cliffs abound". In 1863, it was the site of a major railroad car building shop. The Delaware and Hudson roundhouse was the largest turntable in the world when first built.

National Soccer Hall of Fame (closed)

The National Soccer Hall of Fame in Oneonta features interactive exhibits, artifacts, historic footage and a video wall. The Kicks Zone lets players test their skills and their strategy with speed dribbles, a header cage, animated "Kick It" games, power shots, The Wall, and three-on-three challenges.

Science Discovery Center of Oneonta

Visitors to the Science Discovery Center on the campus of the State University College can experience science through hands-on exhibits and educational displays. Exhibits include matter, force, fluids, sounds, electricity and optics.

Yager Museum

Yager Museum displays Renaissance and Baroque work, 19th and 20th century paintings, sculpture and drawings. The collections fill five galleries and include Native American, pre-Columbian and Mesoamerican artifacts, pottery, baskets, and rugs

Rogers Environmental Education Center, Sherburne, New York

The Rogers Center offers 571 acres of nature trails, bird watching opportunities, hiking and cross-country skiing activities. The natural habitat provide homes for the many plants and animals through aquatic, woodland and field environments. The upper gallery at the Rogers Center has a viewing area of the marsh.

Cazenovia, New York

Located at the end of Cazenovia Lake, it was originally named Ho-wah-ge-neh by the American Indian - meaning lake where the yellow perch swim. It was renamed for a general agent who worked for the Holland Land Co.

Stone Quarry Hill Art Park

Stone Quarry Hill Art Park, one of the first outdoor sculpture parks in upstate New York, features original, one-of-a-kind works of art. There are 108 acres including 5 miles of hiking trails and an amphitheater are part of the art park that features a 360 degree view of the area.

Lorenzo State Historic Site

The 1807 Lorenzo mansion is completed with original furnishings, hand blocked wallpaper, and formal gardens. It is home to a carriage collection as well. Cross country skiing and picnicking can be enjoyed on the grounds.

Cherry Valley, New York

Cherry Valley was settled in 1740 and became a stagecoach stop on the Cherry Valley Turnpike. A memorial in the village cemetery commemorates the massacre in 1778 of most of the residents.

Cherry Valley Museum

Established in 1957, Cherry Valley Museum was originally housed in a converted Hop Barn. The museum is now located at 49 Main Street and features household articles, Civil War and Revolutionary War memorabilia, books, clothing and farm implements on display.

Esperance - George Landis Arboretum

This 97-acre outdoor museum of plants is located on a nineteenth century farm. Some of the collections on display include perennial gardens, rhododendrons and azaleas, beeches, oaks, lilacs, clematis, and dwarf conifers.

Fort Johnson, New York

Built in 1749 by Sir William Johnson, Fort Johnson was confiscated and sold during the American Revolution. It has been restored to the 1749-1775 period including furniture and historical exhibits.

Fort Plain Museum, Fort Plain, New York

Fort Plain is the site of a Revolutionary War fort. Some of the items on display include American Indian artifacts, an Erie Canal room, and information about area agriculture.

Fort Plain - Kurdish Library and Museum

Established in 1988 and operating under Provisional Charter, the Kurdish Library and Museum collects, preserves and regularly exhibits Kurdish costume, weavings, arts and crafts.

Ghent - The Fields Sculpture Park

The Fields Sculpture Park encompasses about 300ac of farmland, 90ac of that are dotted with internationally recognized contemporary sculpture. The 70 sculptures are from a mix of established and emerging artists.

Gilboa, New York

Fossil tree stumps, found west of the Schoharie Creek, are the oldest known species of trees on Earth. Historical markers identify these trees which grew on the shores of an ancient Devonian sea.

Herkimer, New York

Herkimer was settled in 1725 by German Palatines. It was the center of state politics and conventions during the early 1800s. Digging in recent years has found the "Herkimer Diamonds" which are rare, clear quartz crystals.

Herkimer County Historical Society Museum

The Herkimer County Historical Society is housed in the 1884 Suiter Building, the Queen Anne home of Dr. A. Walter Suiter, a prominent citizen and physician. Details of agriculture, industry and domestic life in Herkimer County from the 1700s to 1990s are highlighted. The old county jail and a doll house collection can also be toured.

Erie Canal Cruises

Erie Canal Cruises offer 1.5 hr cruises on the Erie Canal complete with a full historical narration of the 3 Erie Canals and they're importance to the growth of the United States. The cruises include travel thru a historic lock where the vessel and passengers are raised and lowered 20 feet into the Mohawk River.

Remington Plant Tour, Ilion, New York

Remington manufactures firearms and a tour of the gun making process is available. The plant in Ilion sits on part of the property where the original firearms plant was built in 1828.

Remington Museum

The Remington Museum is dedicated to the history of Remington firearms, exhibits feature flintock rifles, rare pistols and revolvers. Other Remington products are on display including a 19th century typewriter and a bicycle from the 1900s.

Oriskany Museum, Oriskany, New York

The Oriskany Museum highlights the Battle of Oriskany and other military memorabilia such as the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany. An anchor and an airplane are featured as well as many documents and photos.

Amsterdam, New York

Amsterdam was settled in 1783 and became an important industrial center due to the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825.

Noteworthy Indian Museum

The Noteworthy Indian Museum features over 60,000 artifacts including clay pots, stone tools, beadwork and baskets that tell the story of the Mohawk. A cultural timeline traces Native American life in the Mohawk Valley from 12,000 years ago to the present.

Walter Elwood Museum and Art Gallery

The Museum has a collection of over 15,000 items pertaining to science, nature and history. Some of the permanent displays include a blacksmith shop, Victorian furnishings, Eskimo exhibits, and a nature room.

Hamilton, New York

Founded in 1795 and first known as Payne's Settlement, Hamilton is home to Colgate University.

Lolly Pop Farm and Petting Zoo (closed), Hartwick, New York

This zoo provides a hands-on petting experience. Many exotic and miniature animals call this zoo home.

Howes Cave, New York

Howes Cave is located in Schoharie County between Cobleskill and Central Bridge on Highway 10.

Iroquois Indian Museum

Archeological, historical, Iroquois artwork and a children's museum are all part of the Iroquois Indian Museum. Displays are devoted to the Iroquois people, their culture and preserving their heritage in areas such as politics, hunting, warfare, games, and chieftainship for men. The children's museum features hands-on exhibits where Iroquois traditions are introduced.

Howe Caverns

Howe Caverns are prehistoric caverns that are 160 to 200 feet underground. They maintain a constant temperature of 52 degrees. Guided tours begin with an elevator ride to the caverns and then travel along pathways through chambers of stalactites and stalagmites.

Cooperstown & Charlotte Valley Railroad, Milford, New York

The Cooperstown & Charlotte Valley Railroad features 1928 passenger coaches providing narrated trips to Cooperstown. The restored depot houses a railway museum.

Shaker Museum and Library, Old Chatham, New York

The Shaker Museum features 26 exhibit areas with over 28,000 objects that include painted shaker furniture, poplarware, domestic items and pre-1900 tools.

Schoharie, New York

Settled in 1712, it is one of the oldest villages in upstate New York. Many of the original buildings remain.

Old Stone Fort Museum Complex

The Old Stone Fort Museum Complex consists of the William W. Badgley Historical Museum, 1860 schoolhouse, and a 1760 Dutch barn. Originally built as a Dutch Reform Church in 1772, it was fortified during the American Revolution with a log stockade. It has been a regional museum and library since 1889.

St Johnsville, New York

Home to the Dutch in the mid-1600s and then the Palatine, who called their new home "the Promised Land" because the area resembled their homeland.

Fort Klock Historic Restoration

Fort Klock is a fortified farmhouse that was built for trading and defense purposes. Built in 1750, it is furnished with antiques and exhibits that deal with rural life in the 18th century. The 30 acre complex also contains reconstructed colonial farm structures, including a working blacksmith's shop, a new world Dutch barn and an early 19th century schoolhouse.

Margaret Reaney Memorial Library and Museum

Built in 1909, the Margaret Reaney Memorial Library & Museum was a gift to the Village of St. Johnsville by local textile manufacturer, Joseph H. Reaney in memory of his mother.
The library has a collection of over 50 paintings by European and American artists. Civil War items, period rooms, farm and trade tools are also on display.

Utica, New York

Old Fort Schuyler, built in 1758, was located in Utica. Utica began to develop after the Revolution and this increased with the completion of the Erie Canal.

Oneida County Historical Society Museum

The Oneida County Historical Society was founded in 1876 to preserve the history of Oneida County. The Battlefield at Oriskany, the Native Americans who first called this land home, and historical exhibits are featured including information on Utica, Oneida County and Mohawk Valley.

Children's Museum

The Children's Museum of Utica is a hands-on environment with emphasis on local history, environmental science and the arts. The Museum also has an outdoor display of real trains.

Italian Cultural Center and Museum

This Italian cultural heritage and museum features exhibits that include folk art, sculptures, and library/archives. Italian language and cultural classes are also offered.

Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute

Visual and performing arts programs are available at Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute as well as an art museum. The Institute was established in 1919, and annually holds over 800 events.

Utica Zoo

Utica Zoo houses a variety of animals including primates, reptiles and amphibians. A petting area is available in the children's zoo.

North Blenheim, New York

North Blenheim has several historic sites including the Old Blenheim Bridge.

Blenheim-Gilboa Pumped Storage Power Project

Blenheim-Gilboa Visitors Center highlights the process when water is released from the reservoir to create electricity during the day and at night the electricity is used to pump water from the lower to the upper reservoir. Energy displays are found in the renovated 19th century dairy barn that houses the visitor center.

Lansing Manor Museum

Lansing Manor was built in 1819 by John Lansing, who represented New York as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention in 1787 and the state's Ratification Convention in 1788. The manor is filled with authentic furnishings from the first half of the 19th century.

Old Blenheim Bridge

Built in 1854, it is said to be the world's longest single-span wooden covered bridge. It is only open to pedestrians.
