Nairobi is a modern city with just about everything built in the last 100 years. Until the 1890s it was an isolated swamp but once the African railway progressed, Nairobi became an administrative centre for the Uganda Railway.
Kibera is located southwest of the city centre and has become the largest slum in Africa, housing one-third of the city's population. On the other hand, the downtown core has new skyscrapers and the outer southern suburbs of Langata and Karen resemble English country villages.
Many attractions are available within one hour's drive from Nairobi allowing for day tripping. Nairobi National Park is located on the edge of the town. Kiambu and Thika are home to tea plantations and offer views in to the Rift Valley.
