19 mi. south of Burlington is Middlebury, which has preserved an attractive old town centre. Features of interest are two small museums on the history of the town, in which the writer Robert Frost figures large; also and in particular, the Vermont State Craft Center. The Sheldon Museum has curiosities from all over North America.
The Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History is housed in an 1829 building in Middlebury. It offers antiques and items related to the history of the area. The Walter Cerf Gallery and the Stewart-Swift Research Center are associated with the museum.

Mount Independence is the site of the largest military fortification of the Revolutionary War. There is a visitor's center which presents historical artifacts and a video presentation.
