Settled in the 1830s, Meridian (pop. 40,000) suffered numerous setbacks throughout its history. The town was destroyed by Union troops during the Civil War. A yellow fever epidemic struck the town in the late 1870s and a hurricane ripped through in 1906. Today manufacturing, trade, timber, and the cattle industry support the city's economy.
