Machias (pop. 2,400) is a popular base to explore the Machias Bay area. Activities here include hiking, sea kayaking, charter boat sightseeing tours, bird watching, beachcombing and sunbathing, canoeing, and fishing.
The Machias River forms a gorge near the town center just off Main Street.
The Burnham Tavern in Machias was built in the early 1770's and is perhaps the oldest building in eastern Maine. The museum displays artifacts and memorabilia from the Revolutionary War and the Civil War.
The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Gates House near Machiasport is an 1807 Federal style residence, partially restored. On display are artifacts pertaining to local history including models of the 'Margaretta' and the 'Unity.'
