Provinces: Bergamo (BG), Brescia (BS), Como (CO), Cremona (CR), Milano (MI), Mantova (MN), Pavia (PV), Sondrio (SO) and Varese (VA)
The historic territory and modern region of Lombardy extends from the High Alps (Bernina massif, Ortles, Adamello group) in the north by way of the Bergamo and Brescia Alps to the Po plain, and includes the central part of that plain between the rivers Sesia and Mincio, bounded on the south by the Apennines. The province's capital is Milan.
General information
Southern Lombardy, in the plain of the Po and the flat pre-Alpine uplands, is one of Italy's most highly developed industrial regions (chemicals and pharmaceuticals, metal-working, car manufacture, engineering and light engineering, textiles, leather goods) as well as one of its most productive agricultural regions (corn, rice, maize, market gardening, fodder crops). The hill regions are mostly devoted to dairy and pastoral farming.
