Lake Lugano
Lake Lugano (Lago di Lugano or Lago Ceresio; alt. 274m/904ft; area 50 sq.km/19 sq.mi; greatest depth 288m/748ft), most of which is in Switzerland.
Castiglione Olona, Italy
A little way west of S.S. 233 (the Milan road), is the old-world village of Castiglione Olona (307m/1,013ft). In the Gothic collegiate church are fine frescoes by Tuscan masters, among them a Virgin Mary by Masolino da Panicale, a pupil of Giotto. The frescoes in the baptistery (1435) depict scenes from the life of John the Baptist, also by Masolino. Inside the notable Chiesa di Villa (1430-41) is the tomb of Count Guido Castiglioni.

The town centers in Lombardy, which boast a large number of historical places of interest are worth visiting. The large lakes in north Italy are also attractive. Bergamo, Brescia, Lake Como, Cremona, Lake Garda, Lake Maggiore, Lodi, Mantua, Milan, Pavia, Varese.
Porlezza, Italy
On the northeast arm of Lake Lugano is the village of Porlezza (271m/894ft), from which an attractive road runs along the south side of the lake, via the little village of Osteno, to Lanzo d'Intelvi (907m/2,993ft), a summer resort in the upper reaches of the Valle d'Intelvi. A short distance northeast is Belvedere di Lanzo (887m/2,927ft), from which a funicular runs down to Santa Margherita on the lake.
