The island of Langeland, some 50 km/31 mi long from Hov at its northern tip to Dovnsklint in the south and 3-9 km/2-6 mi wide, is situated to the southeast of Funen in the Great Belt. The island can be reached by car or ship. From Svendborg on Funen a huge bridge, built in 1967, leads to the island of Tåsinge and from the southern side of this island a causeway and a bridge (1962) via the little island of Siø form a link with Langeland. As well as the ferry services to other Danish islands there is one between Kiel and Bagenkop.
Topography
Langeland is a long and narrow island popular with holiday-makers, with many beautiful beaches, magnificent beech woods and several steep cliffs, especially in the south, including Gulstav Klint and Dovnsklint southeast of Bagenkop.
Langeland has many examples of prehistoric finds. A particularly interesting site, at Humble in the south of the island, is "Kong Humbles Grav" (King Humble's Grave), an impressive Megalithic "corridor grave". Another such grave, Hulbjergjðttestuen, lies near Søgard to the southwest of Bagenkop.
In Lohals, a resort in the north of the island of Langeland, Tom Knudsen's Safari Museum is worth a visit. On display are hunting trophies and ethnographic collections from Africa.
In the southern part of the island of Langeland near road No. 26 lies Hennetved, and not far to the south is Skovsgård Mansion. The mansion's former corn mill was restored in the 1980s and a new "wing" added to house an electric generator. The estate is run on ecological lines, with a collection of horse-drawn wagons, etc.

Twelve km/7.5 mi north of Rudkøbing, Tranekær Castle - the oldest and largest castle in Langeland - stands on a hill. The angular building, which was reconstructed in 1863 (tower in 1859) embraces the remains of a medieval royal castle. From the parking lot by the road to the south of the castle a path leads round the castle lake. In the castle mill a Mill Museum has been set up, because there are many mills on Langeland - old windmills and others which generate electrical power. Some picturesque houses have been preserved in the nearby village of Tranekær By.
The garden contains rare trees and shrubs.
