Laeso Attractions

The island of Læsø lies in the northern Kattegat. It first surfaced when the sea-level sank about 5,000 years ago; parts in the south are often flooded. There is a car ferry between Vesterø Havn on Læsø and Frederikshavn on the coast of Jutland; the crossing takes about 90 minutes. There is also an air taxi to Copenhagen.

Topography

Two-thirds of the island consists of uncultivated land, principally of fen and heath.

Must-see attractions nearby:
In the north lies the Hojsande area of dunes which reaches a height of 30m/100ft; this - like some other parts of the island - has been designated a nature reserve. The south of the island has low-lying meadows along the shore, and many waders and sea birds rest here during May to July. The eastern point, with Danzigmand Dune, is an attractive area and is under a protection order; the dunes are named after a ship, the "Danzig" which was once stranded there. Flat beaches of fine sand attract bathers. The Knotten Peninsula, reached across a narrow sound, is particularly popular.

Byrum, Denmark
Farmhouses with their roofs covered in seaweed are a feature of Byrum, capital of the island of Læsø. When the islanders found they could no longer obtain sufficient reeds with which to thatch their houses they simply used seaweed, of which there was a plentiful supply, in its place.

The Local Museum (Museumsgården) is housed in a half-timbered homestead of four wings with a seaweed-covered roof; here silver and costumes are on display. A windmill stands in front of the house. The 13th C. church boasts a limewash painting of St George and the Dragon and an altar of 1450.
