Itu
The historic town of Itu, founded by Bandeirantes, lies in the Tietà valley, 102km/63mi north-west of São Paulo and 45km/28mi north-east of Sorocaba. To reach it from São Paulo, take SP 280 (Rodovia Castelo Branco) and then SP 308 (Rodovia do Açúcar). Alternatively, take SP 280 as far as km26/mi16 and then SP 312 (Estrada dos Romeiros), which runs through Santana do Parnaiba and Pirapora do Bom Jesus.

50km/30mi south-east of Itu is the town of Pirapora do Bom Jesus, famed for the pilgrimage church of Bom Jesus de Pirapora (1725-1867) and the Casa dos Milagres ("House of Miracles"), containing votive offerings from those who have been granted a favor through the intercession of the church's patron. The Festa do Bom Jesus is celebrated here on August 6th.

Among popular festivals celebrated in the town are the Bloco dos Fantasmas, a parade of spirits on the Saturday of Carnival; the Samba de Cururuquara (May); the Festas Juninas (June Festival); the Festa de Santana (end of July); and Festa da Elevação da Cidade (commemorating the town's municipal charter) on November 14th, with repentistas (impromptu poets) and parades of men in bandeirante costume.

The Museu Republicano da Convenção de Itu, housed in a building of 1830, contains documents on the republican movement in São Paulo, which was led by the coffee-planters, and on the agreement (convenção) reached in Itu in April 1873, which represented the first attempt to centralize the movement and give it a unified political line.
