Carthage was founded in the early 1830s and then incorporated as a city in 1883. Several historical attractions in Carthage include the Carthage Jail, noted as the site of the 1844 death of Joseph Smith, founder of the Latter Day Saints and Kibbe Hancock Heritage Museum featuring Dr. Kibbe's personal collections and other historical exhibits.
Niabi Zoo is home to over 700 animals, which represent 160 species. The Discovery Station allows visitors to experience hands-on encounters with animals. Another highlight of the Niabi Zoo is the Endangered Species Carrousel with zebras, gorillas, and tigers that seats up to 45 people.

Jubilee College was named by its founder, Episcopal Bishop Philander Chase in 1839. It was one of the first educational institutions in Illinois. In 1933 the college and grounds, consisting of 93 acres was presented to the state of Illinois. Since that time the Department of Natural Resources has increased the acreage to 3,200.
The Dickson Mounds Museum presents a 12,000 year historical journey through the world of the American Indian. Interactive exhibits, artifacts, archaeological sites and a children's hands-on exhibit are available.

Macomb was settled by veterans of the War of 1812 and land speculators from the East. It was named for Alexander Macomb, U.S. Army General, who fought the British at Lake Champlain.
Macomb Park District Ball Fore has 18 hole mini golf course, 8 pitching machines, sand volleyball, archery range and a playground.

The Metamora Courthouse was built in 1845 and Abraham Lincoln practiced law here in 1845-86. The first floor contains artifacts of early local history with another exhibit describing the 1850s court system and Lincoln's life. The second floor houses the former courtroom that is furnished to represent the era during which Lincoln practiced law.

The Schuyler Jail was built in 1857-58 and is now restored to house artifacts of pioneer life, soldiers' uniforms, American Indian relics, medical implements and household utensils. Memorabilia from the Scripps family, who donated their family farm to the city for use as a park in 1926.
