Grand Bahama Island is 96mi/150km long west to east and 17mi/27km across at its widest north to south point. The island is split in two by the Grand Lucayan Waterway with most settlement being on the west end and more nature being found on the east end. The Grand Bahama Highway runs from end to end.
The island is high in scrub and pine forests, one of the reasons English settlers first came to the island. It is noted for its good beaches on the south coast and mangrove swamps along the north.

Various companies run sportive activities. The best known are horseback riding through the surf, nature-based kayaking through Lucayan National Park and other locations, deep-sea fishing, glass-bottom boat tours, various snorkel and scuba trips.

Grand Bahama has numerous golf courses for visitors to take advantage of. Two of the better known courses are the Reef Course and the Lucayan Course.
Port of Freeport
Significantly east of downtown Freeport and Port Lucaya, this port is not one where one flows off the ship an into the downtown. Consequently the cruise ships which arrives are the daily junkets out of Florida which carry many Bahamians returning from shopping stateside.
