Gold Country Area Attractions

The Gold Country region of California contains a number of ghost towns abandoned after the frenzy of the Gold Rush. Anyone interested in the history of this dynamic time will find much to see in such places as Angels Camp, Folsom and Jamestown.

Dutch Flat, California
Dutch Flat was originally a rich gold-mining town. Today the residents try to maintain the charm and focus on the history of the town. The nearby river is still panned for gold.
Nevada City, California
Nevada City (pop. 2,855) is located 45mi/72km west of Lake Tahoe. The town was established during the Gold Rush and visitors can still enjoy the history of this dynamic period. The Old Nevada Theater of 1865 is said to be the oldest theater in California.Eight miles northwest on SR 49 is South Yuba River State Park, known for its wildflowers and kayaking.
Tahoe National Forest
Tahoe National Forest is bordered to the north by the Plumas National Forest and to the south by the Eldorado National Forest. Throughout each season there are numerous recreational activities such as skiing, snowmobiling, hiking, boating and fishing. The Tahoe National Forest is also the site of many historic and prehistoric sites that date back over 4,000 years ago.
Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park
Located 16 miles northeast of Nevada City, visitors to Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park will find California's largest hydraulic mine. The huge cliffs are all that remain of this mining technique that involved washing away the mountain in the search for gold.
Firehouse Museum
The Firehouse Museum features artifacts from the doomed Donner Party, the Maidu Indians and the Chinese Joss House.
Miners Foundry Cultural Center
The Miners Foundry Cultural Center in Nevada City was constructed in 1856 and is now used as a cultural center and performing arts facility.
Music in the Mountains Box Office
Year-round classical, pops, big band and jazz concerts are offered.
Sutter Creek, California
Sutter Creek is located between Yosemite and Lake Tahoe on Highway 49 in the Gold Country Area. It is named for John A. Sutter who first mined the area in 1848.Once a thriving part of the Mother Lode Sutter Creek remains a good place to visit with over 60 historic places. The visitors center provides a brochure to a self guided tour.
Sutter Gold Mine
Don a hardhat, and jump aboard the Boss Buggy Shuttle to journey deep underground in Sutter Gold Mine in California's historic Gold Country. Learn about gold mining history from ancient times through to today. Walk through the historic Mother Lode - a huge, gold bearing quartz vein and see real gold deposits. Try your hand at gold panning, visit the Gold Store and see free movies in the Gold Theatre.
Yuba City, California
Yuba City was founded when Samuel Brannan, Pierson Reading, and Henry Cheever purchased land from John Sutter in 1849. They established a distribution center for supplying the Gold Rush 49ers. Sam Brannan was instrumental if having the town laid out and arranged for agents to sell lots.After the Gold Rush was over people turned to the fertile land west of the river, and then Yuba City began to prosper.
Community Memorial Museum
The Community Memorial Museum was established in 1975 as an historic museum. There are displays of local history including Native American and agricultural artifacts.
Angels Camp, California
The City of Angels, better known as Angels Camp (pop. 3,000) is located on Golden Chain Highway 49 near Highway 4 east of Stockton.The town was founded in 1849 by George Angel and is famous as the home of Mark Twain's "Jumping Frog of Calaveras County".
Angels Camp Museum
The Angels Camp Museum has displays of mining equipment as well as minerals and other artifacts from the Gold Rush. There is a large carriage house.
Bodie, California
Mono CountyLocation and general commentsThis ghost town, situated 20mi/32km southeast of Bridgeport on Routes 395 and 270 (the final three miles are not made-up) once boasted 10,000 gold diggers, who were a particularly corrupt and disreputable bunch.
Bodie State Historic Park
Until about 1876 large amounts of gold were mined here; then the town of Bodie fell into decay. The remaining 170 houses have not been fully restored, but were kept from further decay by the creation of a state park in 1964. As a result of the efforts to retain the gold digging atmosphere of the previous century, it represents a place of interest unique in California.In the winter months, the unfinished stretch of the approach road is often barred to traffic.
Tahoe Maritime Museum, Homewood, California
The Tahoe Maritime Museum maintains watercraft and marine artifacts significant in Lake Tahoe's maritime history. Exhibits include early steamers, hydroplane races held in the 1950s and 60s, a 26 foot rowing shell, a square-transomed old-town canoe and a galvanized, hand-riveted fishing boat.
Jackson, California
Jackson (pop. 3,545) is located 40mi/64km southeast of Sacramento. It is the county seat of Amador County and features buildings from the Gold Rush period. There is a walking tour of 20 of the town's vintage homes as well as tours of a 6,000-foot deep mine shaft north of town.
Amador County Museum (closed)
The Amador County Museum is housed in the Armstead C. Brown house, built 1859. The museum features an array of artifacts and collections from the County's early period extending on into this century, including information on present day Jackson. Collections include: A "Gold History Exhibit", "Dressed to the Nines" (fashions of the past), a Sewing and Quilt Exhibit, a Victorian Parlor, a Native American collection, a Chinese American collection, a Victorian Bedroom, and an Old Fashioned Schoolroom.
Vallecito, California
Vallecito is the site of the Moaning Caverns, which are the largest caves in California and used by the Miwok Indians as a burial ground. The Murphy brothers found gold here in 1849 and when they moved on, more rich deposits of gold were discovered in 1852.
Moaning Cavern
Within a 13mi/20km radius north of Sonora there are some caves well worth a visit. In Moaning Cavern near Vallecito, discovered in 1849, you can see interesting rock-formations from the vantage-point of a 100ft/30m spiral staircase.Those parts of the caves which have not been built over can be seen in the course of a three and a half-hour guided tour. The other cave, Mercer Cavern, was discovered in 1885. Here you can see stalagmites, stalactites and aragonites.
Downieville, California
Downieville is located 78mi/126km northeast of Sacramento. The town grew from a few cabins and now features a history of the area where gold nuggets up to 25 pounds were found.
County Museum
The Downieville Museum is housed in a building built 1852, the museum features mining exhibits. It was a Chinese store in earlier times.
Downieville Foundry and Museum
The Downieville Foundry and Museum has historical artifacts including a collection of horse snowshoes.
Jamestown, California
Jamestown began with the discovery of gold here in 1848. Hollywood has made use of the town in a variety of westerns including "High Noon" and "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid".
Railtown 1897 State Historic Park
Railtown 1897 State Historic Park holds one of two short-line roundhouse complexes from the steam era. It has been in operation as a museum since 1971 and is part of the California State Railroad Museum Foundation.The site has been popular with Hollywood appearing in such films as "Unforgiven" as well as the television show "Petticoat Junction".Steam train rides on a six mile track take 40 minutes and run from April through October.Among the equipment is a steam locomotive built in 1922 for the Hutchinson Lumber Company and a Pullman Coach built in 1910 for the Southern Pacific's luxury service.
Jimtown 1849 Gold Mining Camp
The Jimtown 1849 Gold Mining Camp offers tours which show visitors how the 49ers lived and worked. Visitors can watch as prospectors jump each other's claims. Mark Twain will put in an appearance as well. Visitors can pan for their own gold.
Mariposa, California
Mariposa (pop. 1,152) is an unincorporated town and the county seat of the county of the same name. The town is a good base from which to visit nearby Yosemite National Park.
California State Mining and Mineral Museum
The California State Mining and Mineral Museum is located on the Mariposa County Fairgrounds next to Highway 49. It tells the fascinating story of the Gold Rush with an underground mine tunnel and a quartz mill.
Mariposa County Courthouse
The Mariposa County Courthouse is California's oldest courthouse in continuous use. It was built in 1854.
Mariposa Museum and History Center
The Mariposa Museum and History Center has mining displays from the Gold Rush. There is an Indian Village, a schoolroom and a miner's cabin.
Kentucky Mine Museum, Sierra City, California
The Kentucky Mine Museum has displays from a hard rock gold mine including tools and samples. Other exhibits include Native American and Chinese artifacts. Picnic facilities are available.
Suisun City, California
Suisun City is located 36mi/58km southwest of Sacramento on the water. The Grizzly Island Wildlife Area offers hiking, hunting, fishing, and wildlife viewing opportunities.
Bay Area Western Railway Museum
The Bay Area Western Railway Museum gives visitors the opportunity to ride historic streetcars and interurban electric trains. Over 50 historic cars are on display, as well as railway exhibits, and the Streetcar Theater.
Alleghany, California
Alleghany was a gold camp as is one of the last few in California. The Sixteen-to-One Mine was located here.
Alleghany Mining Museum (Underground Gold Miners Musuem)
The Alleghany Mining Museum celebrates mining, which since 1855 has produced more than $90 million worth of gold. Visitors can explore the famous Original Sixteen to One Mine, a working underground gold mine.
Columbia, California
Columbia got its start during the Gold Rush. In 1850 there were about 6,000 miners living here. Columbia is a state park but because it is a town admission is free.
Columbia State Historic Park
About 4mi/6km north of Sonora, on the CA 49, lies the Columbia State Historic Park. Here you can admire the once famous gold-mining town in all its old, restored glory. Thousands of hopeful gold-miners lived here at the time. Although restoration is not yet complete you can already visit most of the houses, including an old school-house, a boarding-house, a fire station and a restaurant.
Columbia Schoolhouse
The Columbia Schoolhouse hasn't housed students since 1937. It was one of the first schoolhouses in the state, built in 1860. Visitors actually get a lesson from a stern teacher, just as they would have in the 1850s. The schoolhouse was restored in 1960.
Wells Fargo Express Office
The Wells Fargo Express Office at the Columbia State Historic Park has sat on this site since 1851. There have been a number of structures. The present one was bought from Wells Fargo in 1946 by the state.
Johnson's Livery Stable
Johnson's Livery Stable is located on State Street, it has displays of wagons and horse outfitting.
Matelot Gulch Miners Supply
Matelot Gulch Miners Supply in the Columbia State Historic Park lets visitors pan for gold.
Chinese Herb Shop
The Chinese Herb Shop at the Columbia State Historic Park has medicines and herbs.
Johnsville, California
Johnsville is the home of ski racing which got its start nearby. In 1872 the town was established at the base of Eureka Peak.
Mokelumne Hill, California
Mokelumne Hill began in 1848 when gold was discovered in the Mokelumne River. Thousands rushed to the area to pan for gold.
Murphys, California
Murphys was named for by Dan and John Murphy who discovered gold here in 1849 during the Gold Rush.
Mercer Caverns
Mercer Caverns in Murphy has been open since 1885. There are ten rooms and one hour guided tours of the caves are available.
Murphys Old Timers Museum
Murphys Old Timers Museum on Main Street has mining displays from the Gold Rush. The old stone building was completed in 1856.
Forest Meadows Golf Course
Forest Meadows Golf Course is an 18 hole, par 60 public golf course.
Penn Valley - Museum of Ancient and Modern Art
The Penn Valley Museum of Ancient and Modern Art holds a collection of art from Europe and Africa.
San Andreas, California
Mexican settlers named San Andreas after St Andrew in 1848, during the Gold Rush. In 1866, San Andreas became the Seat of Calaveras County.
Calaveras County Historical Museum
The Calaveras County Historical Museum was once the county jail and courthouse. There are mining and American Indian exhibits as well as a garden of native California plants and trees.
California Caverns
The California Caverns in Cave City have been open since 1850. The caves feature miles of passages. The California Caverns is one of the largest public caves in the United States.
Pine Grove, California
Pine Grove has a hotel which was originally built as a stop for the stage coach.
Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park
Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park has 135 acres of trails, a reconstructed village and a museum.
