The old episcopal city of Fulda is beautifully situated in the valley of the river Fulda, between the foothills of the Rhön and the Vogelsberg. The 18th century Prince-Bishops gave the town its Baroque stamp.
In the Domplatz in Fulda, to the west of the Schloss, stands the Cathedral (by Johann Dientzenhofer, 1704-12). In the crypt are the remains of St Boniface (d. 754).
The portal towers are one of the most striking features of the cathedral.
Cathderal Treasury
In the Fulda Cathedral is the Cathedral Museum, with religious art and the cathedral treasury.
North of the Cathedral in Fulda is the Michaelskirche, one of the oldest churches in Germany (rotunda and crypt of 822). Behind it is the Bishop's Palace (Bischöfliches Palais).
Beyond the river Fulda, in the Neuenberg district (St-Laurentius-Strasse) of Fulda, is the German Fire Service Museum, with fire engines from 1808 to 1937 and a collection of documents.
Address: Feuerwehrmuseum, St Laurentius-Strasse 3, D-36041 Fulda, Germany
Ten minutes' walk north of the Schlossgarten in Fulda is the Frauenberg monastery (founded c. 800; present buildings 1780; Baroque church), from which there is a fine view.
In the old town (mostly now a pedestrian zone) in Fulda, to the south of the Schloss, stands the Old Town Hall (originally 16th C.; restored). Nearby, in a former Jesuit seminary in Universitätsstrasse, is the Vonderau Museum (prehistory, folk traditions, natural history).
In Heinrich-von-Bibra-Platz, between the Schloss and Fulda's railroad station (Bahnhof), can be found the Provincial Library, with valuable codices and Gospel books from the old Fulda monastery school and a 14-line Gutenberg Bible.
In Fulda's Neuenberg district is the Andreaskirche, which belonged to the Benedictine monastery of Andreasberg. In the crypt are fine 11th C. wall paintings.
In Fulda's northeastern district of Petersberg is St Peter's Church, which preserves the remains of St Lioba (d. c. 780). In the upper church can be seen relief slabs of the 12th century. In the crypt are believed to be the oldest wall paintings in Germany (836-847). From here is a good view of the town.
