An hour's drive north of Denver, in the oil-rich eastern foreland of the Front Range, is Fort Collins (pop. 68,000), a town founded in 1864 which is now the seat of Colorado State University. Features of interest are the lovingly restored old town center with its attractive shops and restaurants as well as the Western Museum.
Fort Collins lies on the edge of the prairie, on the Cache la Poudre River at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. Known as the Choice City, it is the largest city in Northern Colorado.
Avery House is a historic home in Fort Collins, built in 1879, by Franklin Avery - founder of First National Bank. The original home had two rooms on the first floor, three bedrooms upstairs and a basement. Avery House, the gazebo, fountain and carriage house are registered on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Curfman Gallery at Colorado State University has a collection of art on display. The work of local and student artists as well as national and international artists is on display.
