Fano Attractions

The North Sea island of Fanø, developed from a sandbank in the sea, lies off the coast of South Jutland opposite the port of Esbjerg. With its miles of sandy beaches it has become a popular holiday resort. During the holiday season there are ferries every half hour from Esbjerg; the crossing takes about 20 minutes.

Sonderho, Denmark
Sønderho, on the southern tip of the island of Fano, is a 15 km/9 mi drive from Nordby. The village has some pretty thatched fishermen's houses. Hannes Hus (ca. 1770) houses a local museum, with furniture and antique wall-tiles. The local inn is one of the oldest buildings on Fanø. Many model ships, including a warship and a lifeboat, hang from the roof of the little church. The pulpit has a canopy, and there is an interesting sculpture "Fanøkone med barn" (Fano woman with child), by Elof Nielsen (1949).
Vesterhavsbad
About 3 km/2mi southwest of Nordby lies the resort of Fanø Vesterhavsbad, with an attractive beach extending south along the west coast of the island. The state forest, which practically covers the interior of the island, has been cultivated since the turn of the century and contains pine, oak and beech trees.
