The old mining town of Falun, now the administrative center of Kopparberg county, lies on both banks of the river Falun between the Varpasjö and the Runnsjö.
Although Falun's deposits of copper, discovered before the year 1000, were of great economic importance to Sweden for many centuries, the town received its municipal charter only in 1614, when its great days were coming to an end. Falun is still a considerable industrial town, and also attracts many winter sports enthusiasts. It is the site of one of the world's most famous snowboard competitions, the Battle.
