The old mining town of Falun, now the administrative center of Kopparberg county, lies on both banks of the river Falun between the Varpasjö and the Runnsjö.

Although Falun's deposits of copper, discovered before the year 1000, were of great economic importance to Sweden for many centuries, the town received its municipal charter only in 1614, when its great days were coming to an end. The mining area of Great Copper Mountain in Falun is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Falun is still a considerable industrial town, and also attracts many winter sports enthusiasts. It is the site of one of the world's most famous snowboard competitions, the Battle.
Dalarnas Museum
To the west of Falun, across the river, is the Dalarna Museum (opened 1962 ) with a hall used for art exhibitions. The museum displays local costumes, paintings by local artists, craft products and other material illustrating the folk traditions of Dalarna.

Kopparberg Church
At the North Station (Norra Station) stands the 14th century Kopparberg Church, Falun's oldest building.

There are a number of old wooden houses (17th-19th C.) in the Ästanfors, Gamla Herrgården and Elsborg districts.

On the east side of the town is the Lugnet Ski Stadium (1973), with ski-jump towers up to 52m/171ft high (elevator; fine views). Nearby is a large sports hall.
