East Falkland Island is the primary island in the archipelago, and home to the most populated settlements. Stanley, the capital of the Falkland Islands, is located on East Falkland and is the usual entry point for most visitors.
The island covers 7039.5sq.km/4364.5sq.mi of mainly rugged and hilly terrain with the exception of the Lefonia plain in the south. The coastline is indented with bays and inlets. The island is home to some 163 varieties of plants and 21 types of land birds.

Darwin, Falkland Islands
Darwin is less than a two hour drive from Stanley. There is a popular lodge here, which offers fishing and riding excursions, as well as golf.
Mount Pleasant Airport
Mount Pleasant Airport is located 56 miles southwest of Stanley. There are buses which shuttle passengers into the town.
Port Louis, Falkland Islands
Port Louis is under an hours drive from Stanley on the north coast of East Falkland Island. It is a good base for exploring the surrounding area, which boats some spectacular scenery and is home to three types of penguins.
Port San Carlos, Falkland Islands
Located on the north bank of the San Carlos River, Port San Carlos offers great fishing opportunities and beautiful scenery.
Salvador, Falkland Islands
Salvador is one of the less visited settlements but is a great area for wildlife viewing. Five kinds of penguins, elephant seals, sea lions, and a variety of shore and inland birds can be seen here.

San Carlos is best known for its role in the 1982 conflict. British forces began their military campaign from this settlement.
