Del Rio (pop. 31,000) is an international border crossing point. The town also provides a good base from which to explore Amistad National Recreation Area.
Langtry, on the banks of the Rio Grande in western Texas, exemplifies the wildest of the Wild West. Here for 21 years the self-elected Judge Roy Bean applied his ideas of law, advertising in the sign above his saloon " the law west of Pecos" - and that's exactly how it was. Nowadays it is tourists rather than outlaws who come to the museum.
The Whitehead Memorial Museum features a collection of pioneer buildings, including a log cabin, chapel, houses, and a replica of Judge Roy Bean's saloon and court. Both Judge Roy Bean and his son are buried on the grounds.
