Philomath (pop. 3,800) grew up around Philomath College which was established in 1867. The name is Greek for "love of learning".

Philomath has walking, jogging, and biking paths, as well as numerous parks and nature preserves in the surrounding area.

Located in the Philomath College Building, the Benton County Historical Museum displays art work of Oregon artists. The museum collection includes about 65,000 items related to the history of the area.
