Coos Bay Tourist Attractions

Coos Bay (pop. 15,375) is located near the coast of the Pacific Ocean at the mouth of the Coos River in Oregon. For the outdoor enthusiast there is a wealth of opportunities including whale watching, Llama trekking, fishing, boating, golfing, and many other sporting activities. The town also features a boardwalk and retail area, popular with locals and visitors.

Coos Art Museum

The Coos Art Museum features a range of displays by local, national, and international artists. The permanent collection contains 530 works of art.

Surroundings

There are several interesting towns and attractions in the Coos Bay area on the Oregon coast.

Charleston

Charleston is located just west of Coos Bay and is a popular fishing spot. Charter boats also offer opportunities for whale-watching and sightseeing.

Shore Acres State Park

Shore Acres State Park is the site of the former mansion of Louis Simpson who founded North Bend. The Mansion no longer stands but the gardens on the grounds have been preserved and maintained and are now open to the public. The park also offers spectacular views of the ocean from it's cliff-top location and trails leading to the shoreline.

Reedsport

Reedsport (pop. 4,300) is located at the mouth of the Umpqua River on the Oregon coast. The town was built on a low-lying tideland which had been built up using clay from the surrounding area. Regular flooding eventually led to the construction of a dike which protects the lower levels of the town. The area is a popular with sport-fisherman.

Umpqua Discovery Center

The Umpqua Discover Center in Reedsport features a variety of displays and interactive exhibits related to the natural history and cultural history of the Lower Umpqua area and the Oregon coast.

Bandon

The small town of Bandon is located on Oregon's west coast. The area features interesting rock formations. The town's main industry is the production of cranberries.

Bullards Beach State Park

Bullards State Park is located just north of Bandon and features beach dunes and a forest. Within the park is the Coquille River Lighthouse which runs tours and displays lighthouse exhibits.
Between March and May visitors may observe migrating gray whales.

Coastside Conservatory and Botanical Garden

The West Coast Conservatory is a pesticide and chemical free 90,000 square foot tropical rain forest reproduction. The focus of the project is on education and research.

West Coast Game Park

The West Coast Game Park is located just south of Bandon and is home to more than 450 animals from all over the world. Many of the animals roam freely within the park. Young animals can be available for petting.

Coquille River Museum

The Coquille River Museum in Bandon's old city hall features displays on the history of the Coquille native tribe and the history of the town.

Seven Devils State Recreation Site

The main attraction at the Seven Devils State Recreation Site is the long beach. The park offers day use with picnic facilities available.

Golden and Silver Falls State Park

The Golden and Silver Falls State Park is a small park located at the end of the Coos River Highway. It offers hiking opportunities to the two waterfalls through old-growth firs and cedars.

Coos County Logging Museum, Myrtle Point

The Coos County Logging Museum in Myrtle Point is located in a unique dome-shaped building. It features displays related to the logging industry from the early 1900's.

North Bend

North Bend (pop. 9,500) is located on the Oregon coast and is known as the Gateway to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. It offers a variety of outdoor activities.

Coos County Historical Society Museum

The Coos County Historical Society Museum in North Bend focuses on the history of the area from pioneer times.

Cape Arago State Park

Cape Arago State Park offers a scenic headland with hiking trails, a sandy beach, tidal pools, migrating whalesas well as seal and sea lion colonies.
