The Holland Land Company began offering lots in 1799, on the old Buffalo Road, to those who would build taverns to accommodate travelers. The Town of Clarence was established in 1808.
Clarence is known as the "Antiques Capital of Western New York" and many of its historic buildings have been preserved.

Asa Ransom purchased a large tract of land from the Holland Land Company and is considered one of the "founding fathers" of Clarence Hollow. He opened a grist mill in 1803 on his property.
The church is closed and currently used for other purposes.
Built in 1877, Clarence Church featured an interior construction that allowed for movable walls which surrounded the baptistry located at the front of the sanctuary.
Clarence Classical School was moved by horse and cart to its current location in 1841 to make room for the railroad. It was established as a private school that charged tuition.
A German Methodist church was built on this site in 1876. The congregation merged with other Methodists in 1907 and the building became the Grange Hall.
In 1844, Abraham Shope donated land to the Clarence Church of Christ Disciples, who built a stone church on the property. It later served as a tenant house for the Auto Club and a restaurant before being purchased by the Historical Society.
