Central Valley Area Attractions

The Central Valley region of California is the site of Fresno, Modesto and the Sequoia National Forest. The region was settled by Jedediah Smith in 1828, with many settlers that followed.

Tupman - Tule Elk State Reserve

Tule Elk State Reserve protects a herd of Tule elk (also known as dwarf elk) that are most visible near park headquarters. The elk are most active from late summer through early autumn. The Tule Elk State Reserve visitor center has displays on natural history and information about the elk.
Large numbers of tule elk herds were lost during the 1880s due to habitat loss and hunting. In 1874, Henry Miller, a cattleman, began efforts to try and save the diminishing herds. In 1932, the tule elk herd was given permanent protection on the Reserve. Herds of tule elk can now be found across California thanks to successful transplantation efforts from the reserve.

Minter Field Air Museum, Shafter, California

The Minter Field Air Museum is housed in the original fire station, built in 1941. The base was a major basic training facility for nearly 12,000 pilots who received basic training in BT-13s, UC-78's, AT-6s, P-38s and B-25s.
The Minter Field Air Museum houses artifacts and photographs of the men and women who were stationed at this location. Artifacts include a period fire truck, 1944 Ford jeep, military uniforms, radio equipment, Echelons (Class Books), Snap Roll Newsletters, and hundreds of photographs.

Turlock, California

Turlock was founded in 1871 by John William Mitchell, a prominent grain farmer who owned 100,000 acres of land from Keyes to Atwater (encompassing what is now the City of Turlock). Originally Turlock was to be named "Sierra" but with the potential for confusion with the mountains or county of the same name, "Sierra" was abandoned. "Turlock" may come from "turlough," an Irish dry lake.

Turlock Lake State Recreation Area

Turlock Lake State Recreation Area is open all year, located in the San Joaquim Valley. Camping, picnicking, fishing, swimming, boating, and water skiing are available for visitors along with a variety of native plant life.

Carnegie Arts Center

The Carnegie Arts Center has displays of artwork from local artists. There are also concerts and other cultural activities.

Sacramento Valley Museum, Williams, California

The Sacramento Valley Museum in Williams is located in the old high school, built in 1911, with 27 rooms. Historic exhibits of life in Sacramento Valley from the mid-1800s to the 1930s are featured. The rooms include an apothecary, a kitchen, an old-fashioned general store, and documents with deeds signed by various United States presidents.

Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park, Earlimart, California

Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park has restored buildings from the beginning of the century. The town was founded in 1908. It was the site of the only California town founded, financed and governed by African Americans. The schoolhouse was used until 1972 and has been furnished as it would have been in 1915.

Oakhurst - Fresno Flats Historical Park

Fresno Flats Historical Park is home to several historic buildings typical of the late-19th century. Two restored and furnished homes dating to the 1870s, a pair of early-day one-room schools, two 19th Century jails and several other farm buildings are featured.

Sanger Depot Museum, Sanger, California

The Sanger Depot Museum is housed in the Sanger Railroad Depot. Built in 1887, the Depot was the hub of the town. Exhibits include a replica of Sanger's 7th Street circa the 1890's and 1900's, a collection of Yokut Indian basketry, and the Nation's Christmas Tree - a 3,500 year old redwood - that was dedicated in 1926.

Tehachapi, California

This old railroad town is now located in the Tehachapi-Mojave Wind Resource Area where more than 4,900 wind turbines generate 1.3 billion KW-hours of electricity per year (enough to serve 500,000 people). The best time to see these turbines spinning is late afternoon when the hot wind blows from the Mojave Desert.

Tehachapi Museum

Tehachapi Museum features ranching, farming and mining equipment indigenous to the area. Exhibits include relics dating from a little more than 100 years ago - when the white man came to the area; handicrafts and tools used by the indigenous Indians; evidence of prehistoric animals and dinosaurs including models of Ice Age Animals, as well as the natural history of the area.

Mourning Cloak Ranch and Botanical Gardens

The Mourning Cloak Ranch and Botanical Gardens is located at 22101 Old Town Road in Tehachapi.
The gardens contain over 2,200 species of plants on 20 acres of hillside.

Tehachapi Loop

A railroad engineer conceived the Tehachapi Loop in 1876, allowing trains to climb a steep grade. As many as 40 freight trains a day execute the loop, making it the busiest single-track line in the United States.

Woodland, California

Woodland is located 15mi/24km northwest of Sacramento. This Gold Rush town established in 1861 was first known as Yolo City. Known as the "City of Trees", Woodland has many cultural, recreational and leisure opportunities.

Hays Antique Truck Museum

The Hays Antique Truck Museum in Woodland features 100 trucks from over 94 manufacturers built between 1903 and 1954; and vehicles powered by steam, gas diesel and electricity.

Yolo County Historical Museum

The Yolo County Historical Museum houses a collection of furnishings and artifacts depicting the various eras from the 1850's to the 1930's. The outbuildings contain displays of agriculture and everyday life of the same period.

Woodland Opera House

The Opera House was fully restored and reopened in 1989 and offers live entertainment on a year-round basis.

Delano - Paramount Citrus

Paramount Citrus processes various types of fruit juices, up to 10 million cartons annually.

Fairfield, California

Fairfield (pop. 77,211) located southwest of Sacramento began as a tiny frontier village in the 1850's. It is the site of Travis Air Force Base.

Jelly Belly Candy Company (formerly Herman Goelitz Candy Company)

The Jelly Belly Candy Company makes a lot of jelly beans. Visitors can tour the real working factory where over 150 different sweet treats are made. Learn the secrets to how they create the legendary Jelly Belly bean, and discover why it takes more than a week to make a single bean.

Travis Air Force Museum

The Travis Air Force Museum is located in Building 80, the old base commissary, on Travis Air Force Base. Displays highlight the history of this U.S. Air Force complex and airlifting over the Pacific. Photographs, uniforms, and memorabilia offer insight into life on the base.

Western Railway Museum

Visitors to the Western Railway Museum in Fairfield can ride historic streetcars and interurban electric trains from all over California and other western states. Over 50 historic cars are on display along with railway exhibits.

Paradise Valley Golf Course

Paradise Valley Golf Course is an 18-hole public course in Fairfield that features many doglegs and bunkers. The course is suitable for golfers of all abilities.

Scandia Family Fun Center

The Scandia Family Fun Center in Fairfield features a number of family and children's activities including miniature golf, an arcade, amusement rides and a train.

Lebec, California

Lebec (pop. 400) is located in Grapevine Canyon southwest of Tehachapi. Lebec was named after Peter le Beck who was mysteriously killed by a bear in 1873.

Fort Tejon State Historic Park

Fort Tejon was set up by the United States army in 1854. The fort now displays Civil War battles and military displays.

Oakwood Lake Water Park (closed), Manteca, California

The water park is closed.
The Oakwood Lake Water Park has more than 30 water rides and a wading pool.

Oakdale, California

Oakdale is located 23mi/37km southeast of Stockton, a gateway to Yosemite National Park and the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range.

Oakdale Museum

The Oakdale Museum is located in the oldest building in town. Built in 1869, the historic Sydnor-Prowse House was built for the Postmaster. Exhbits include photos, artifacts, a library, and exhibit space.

Oakdale Cowboy Museum

There are saddles and rodeo mementos on display at the Oakdale Cowboy Museum. The museum is located in the Southern Pacific Railway depot.

Hershey Chocolate USA (closed to the public)

Hershey Chocolate USA in Oakdale is now closed to the public.

Vacaville, California

Vacaville is located 33mi/53km southwest of Sacramento. It is the site of a maximum security mental hospital.

Nut Tree Theme Park

The Nut Tree began in 1921 as a roadside fruit stand shaded by a giant walnut tree that became a beloved California landmark where travelers came for great food, service and fun. The Nut Tree Theme Park is a place where all generations can share a fun and relaxing time. Vacaville Museum

The Vacaville Museum collects and preserves artifacts that relate to the history of Solano County. Exhibits, programs, events and workshops provide a cultural experience for all that visit.

North Fork, California

North Fork (pop. 600) is located near Oakhurst and Kings Canyon National Park.

Sierra Mono Indian Museum

The Sierra Mono Indian Museum has one of the largest basket collections from the Mono Indians. The museum also features wildlife exhibits, tools, jewelry and baskets from other North American Indian tribes. The Tettelton Wildlife display in natural dioramas is also on display at the Sierra Mono Indian Museum.
