Central Croatia Attractions
Central Croatia is often overlooked by travelers who head directly to Dalmatia and the coast, leaving little time to explore the interior of the country. However, some of the Croatia's best attractions lie within the region of Central Croatia, including the capital city of Zagreb. Central Croatia encompasses not only the lowlands in and around Zagreb, but also the regions of Slavonia and Baranja in the far east of Croatia and the northern counties of Zagorje, Prekmura, with the cities of Varazdin and Cakoved.
Zagreb is a thriving city and the economic and cultural hub of Croatia, with numerous museums, theatres, and university. Outside the city the countryside is made up of rolling hills, old towns, and Baroque architecture. Slavonia and Baranja have a culture all to their own. This fertile area, made up of hills and plains, is also home to a section of the Danube River.
Central Croatia was heavily affected by the War in the 1990s. Some towns were devastated by the bombing, with some city centers and many historical monuments being completely destroyed. The economy has been destroyed in some areas leaving mass unemployment and in some cases little tourist infra structure. However, much work has been done, particularly in the major centers and historic areas, to rebuild and attract tourists back to the area.
