Carriacou and Petit Martinique Attractions

Northeast of Grenada are the less visited islands of Carriacou and Petit Martinique. Considered dependencies of Grenada, the commercial and administrative center for these islands is Hillsborough on Carriacou.

Carriacou

The island of Carriacou lies 27 km (16 mi) northeast of Grenada and is serviced by small planes or boat. The main town is Hillsborough, located along the west coast.
The island is rural in nature and home to a number of small villages. The rolling hills are dryer than the those of Grenada, with cactus and scrubland. The northern section of the island offers some good beaches.

Hillsborough

Hillsborough, has a small population and a very relaxed feel. Colorful wooden buildings along side 19th C stone structures and tin shacks give the town a unique quality. There are good views and plenty of activity from the pier. To the north of the town is a beach and the Silver Beach Resort.

Hospital Lookout

The hilltop hospital grounds of Hillsborough offer fine views over the island and surrounding areas. There are some cannons left over from a British fort which once stood on the site.

Carriacou Museum

The Carriacou Museum in Hillsborough displays a range of colonial artifacts, Amerindian items, and some local art work.

Sugar Mill

Past the hospital in Hillsborough is an old stone sugar mill perched near the roadside.

Carriacou Parang Festival

The annual Carriacou Parang Festival is held in mid December before Christmas. The celebration includes mainly musical entertainment, with local bands performing throughout the weekend, as well as dance shows, and other performers.

Bogles

North of Hillsborough is the small village of Bogles with a beach past the north end at La Roche Bay.

L'Esterre

Southwest of Hillsborough on L'Esterre Bay is the village of L'Esterre which still maintains many French traditions.

Lauriston International Airport

Lauriston International Airport on the island of Carriacou is located southwest of Hillsborough. Taxis attend the airport when flights arrive.

Petit Carenage Bay

Petit Carenage Bay, on the north eastern tip of the island, offers a pleasant beach and good views of the surrounding islands.

Tyrrel Bay

In the southwestern section of Carriacou is Tyrrel Bay with a large protected beach. The area is a popular yachting anchorage.

Windward

Located along the northeastern shore of Carriacou, Windward is a small coastal village with a Scottish heritage.

Petit Martinique

Located 5 km (3 mi) northeast of Carriacou, Petit Martinique is a small volcanic island.
With a church, a school, a grocery store, a restaurant and one road, the island will be of interest to those who are looking to get away from development. The island is inhabited mainly by fishermen and seafarers and is popular with yachters.
