California - North Coast Area Attractions

The Hoopa Tribal Museum displays baskets, jewelry, tools, a redwood canoe and ceremonial clothing still used in Hoopa tribal events.

The Klamath National Forest has 1.7 million acres and stretches through northern California into Oregon. It has excellent fishing and hunting.

Lakeport (pop. 4,390) is located on the west shore of Clear Lake and is known for fishing.

Clear Lake in Lakeport is California's second largest freshwater lake. There is excellent bass fishing here.

The Lake County Historical Museum in Lakeport has a mining collection and a display of American Indian artifacts. There is also a large collection of historic photographs.

The Point Arena Lighthouse opened for business in 1870 and operated until damaged by an earthquake in 1906. Point Arena Lighthouse was rebuilt and reopened in 1908. The Coast Guard automated the lighthouse in 1977. The lighthouse now gets 30,000 visitors a year who wish to climb to the top.

The Mendocino County Museum in Willits has exhibits from the history of the county including American Indian and railway exhibits, contemporary and traditional arts.

The Roots of Motive Power in Willits got its start in 1982. It is dedicated to the preservation of steam powered equipment and railroad artifacts. The collection includes 29 units including the California Western Skunk steam locomotive with its caboose.

A children's slide, a speed slide, an inner-tube slide, an aqua tube, a splash fountain, and a heated pool are featured.
