The Gold Country region of California contains a number of ghost towns abandoned after the frenzy of the Gold Rush. Anyone interested in the history of this dynamic time will find much to see in such places as Angels Camp, Folsom and Jamestown.
Alleghany, California
Alleghany was a gold camp as is one of the last few in California. The Sixteen-to-One Mine was located here.
Alleghany Mining Museum (Underground Gold Miners Musuem)
The Alleghany Mining Museum celebrates mining, which since 1855 has produced more than $90 million worth of gold. Visitors can explore the famous Original Sixteen to One Mine, a working underground gold mine.

Angels Camp, California
The City of Angels, better known as Angels Camp (pop. 3,000) is located on Golden Chain Highway 49 near Highway 4 east of Stockton.
The town was founded in 1849 by George Angel and is famous as the home of Mark Twain's "Jumping Frog of Calaveras County".

Angels Camp Museum
The Angels Camp Museum has displays of mining equipment as well as minerals and other artifacts from the Gold Rush. There is a large carriage house.

Columbia, California
Columbia got its start during the Gold Rush. In 1850 there were about 6,000 miners living here. Columbia is a state park but because it is a town admission is free.

About 4mi/6km north of Sonora, on the CA 49, lies the Columbia State Historic Park. Here you can admire the once famous gold-mining town in all its old, restored glory. Thousands of hopeful gold-miners lived here at the time. Although restoration is not yet complete you can already visit most of the houses, including an old school-house, a boarding-house, a fire station and a restaurant.

Downieville, California
Downieville is located 78mi/126km northeast of Sacramento. The town grew from a few cabins and now features a history of the area where gold nuggets up to 25 pounds were found.

The Downieville Museum is housed in a building built 1852, the museum features mining exhibits. It was a Chinese store in earlier times.

The Downieville Foundry and Museum has historical artifacts including a collection of horse snowshoes.
Homewood - Tahoe Maritime Museum, California
The Tahoe Maritime Museum maintains watercraft and marine artifacts significant in Lake Tahoe's maritime history. Exhibits include early steamers, hydroplane races held in the 1950s and 60s, a 26 foot rowing shell, a square-transomed old-town canoe and a galvanized, hand-riveted fishing boat.

Jamestown, California
Jamestown began with the discovery of gold here in 1848. Hollywood has made use of the town in a variety of westerns including "High Noon" and "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid".
Railtown 1897 State Historic Park

Steam train rides on a six mile track take 40 minutes and run from April through October.
Among the equipment is a steam locomotive built in 1922 for the Hutchinson Lumber Company and a Pullman Coach built in 1910 for the Southern Pacific's luxury service.

Jamestown - Jimtown 1849 Gold Mining Camp
The Jimtown 1849 Gold Mining Camp offers tours which show visitors how the 49ers lived and worked. Visitors can watch as prospectors jump each other's claims. Mark Twain will put in an appearance as well. Visitors can pan for their own gold.
