Cabo San Lucas Tourist Attractions

How to get there
By bus on the Carretera Transpeninsular (MEX 1) from Tijuana via Ensenada, Mulegé, Loreto, La Paz and San José del Cabo; by ferry from Puerto Vallarta, service at present out of operation.
By air internal Mexican and international flights to San José del Cabo (86km/53mi to the north-east).
The former fishing community and now fast expanding modern holiday centre of Cabo San Lucas lies surrounded by a landscape in which virtually nothing grows, at the southern tip of the Lower Californian peninsula. Spectacular rock formations, varied beaches, an ocean teeming with fish and an excellent tourist infrastructure attract increasing numbers of holidaymakers, mainly from the USA, and keen deep-sea anglers in particular.

Seaside Resort

Having grown up in an isolated setting at the southern end of the 1700km/1056mi-long Carretera Transpeninsular, Cabo San Lucas comprises just a harbour and a number of houses, shops, restaurants and hotels. It is a really excellent centre for all forms of watersports. Boats run trips to El Arco, a rock arch hollowed out by the sea at the point where the Gulf of California and Pacific Ocean meet. The beaches and bays on either side of the headland (El Médano, Amor, Sol, Santa María, Colorado, etc.) are individually very distinctive, characterised by their varied types of sand and rock. While some have calm waters, others are pounded by huge breakers; fish abound everywhere. Among the many enticing diving grounds within easy reach near by perhaps the most fascinating are those around the extraordinary submarine "sand cascade". At another site nodules of manganese litter the seabed.

Surroundings

More pleasant beaches and interesting coastal scenery can be found by driving north along Road 19 towards Todos Santos (70km/43mi). The Todos Santos coast has been a surfers' paradise for some years. Many aficionados of the sport were attracted there by the 15 m (50 ft) waves caused by "El Nino". Beyond Todos Santos the road continues to San Pedro and La Paz (80km/50mi).
About 40km/25mi north-east of Cabo San Lucas is the little tourist port of San José del Cabo.
