Brandon, Manitoba Attractions

The "wheat town" of Brandon has the Assiniboine River gently winding its way through the city and is responsible for carving the beautiful Assiniboine Valley. Brandon, the second largest city in Manitoba, is a prairie city with a very diverse culture.
Brandon is pleasant place to visit, particularly in the summer, having won numerous awards in the Communities in Bloom competition. Brand is also home to the Art Gallery of South-western Manitoba and the Shilo military base is a short drive away. The city hosts several festivals throughout the year including Ag Days, the Brandon Jazz Festival, and the Manitoba Summer Fair.

Agriculture Canada Station (Brandon Research Centre)
The Agriculture Canada Station does research into plant-foods, herbicides and fodder, the genetics of barley and the breeding and feeding of cattle, pigs and poultry. Two-thirds of the total area of corn grown in Western Canada is planted with varieties developed here.

Brandon Allied Arts Centre (Closed)

Every year there are temporary exhibitions and displays of handicraft and painting to be seen in the Brandon Allied Arts Center.
Brandon University
At Brandon University, where there are guided tours available, the Administration Building, built in 1901, the 1906 School of Music and the J.R. Brodie Science Building are of interest.
Brandon University is well known for its sporting teams, especially basketball. Games are open to the public and typically take place throughout the winter term. Brandon University specializes in the study of matters related to agriculture but also offers liberal arts degrees.

The campus is well laid out and is a pleasant place to stroll about.

XII Manitoba Dragoons and 26th Field Artillery Regiment Museum
The 26th Field Artillery Regiment Museum displays military equipment, uniforms and memorabilia. A library adjoins it.
Housed in the north end of the historical Brandon Armoury built in 1907, the 26th Field Artillery Regiment Museum is staffed entirely by volunteers. The museum has information on practically every military engagement the Canadian military has been involved in. A highlight of the 26th Field Artillery Regiment Museum is the collection of 400 regimental buttons from Canadian, British, and American units.

Tips
The museum is open Tuesday afternoons in summer and Tuesday from 9 AM to 9 PM in the winter.

Brandon Surroundings

Grand Valley Provincial Park
In the Grand Valley Provincial Recreation Park 10 km (6 mi.) west of the town lies Stott Site. In this archaeologically important region where bison were once hunted bones and objects at least 1200 years old have been found.
Interpretive trails run through the park providing information and beautiful views of the valley.
Boissevain - International Peace Garden
The International Peace Garden Cairn is located directly on the border of the United States and Canada, flanked by a flagpole representing each country on the designated side.

The garden features a floral clock, a bell tower that chimes every fifteen minutes and on the hour, two gazebos, and an Interpretive Center.
