The historic county of Avon is now grouped into the Wessex tourist region.
Bratton Camp and White Horse
Bratton Camp and White Horse is an Iron-Age hill fort and white horse carved into the hillside. The horse is at least 300 years old, although its shape has altered.
Brockley, England
Brockley has a very interesting church, made up of three buildings and a collection of farm sheds. The church is cared for by the Redundant Churches Foundation and is a model of early 19th century church architecture, with a box family pew and several monuments. In the cemetery is a grave with a skull and crossbones, reputed to be that of a pirate. The late 17th century court next to the church in Brockley is now a retirement home. There is also a restored Tudor farmhouse nearby.
Burnham-on-Sea, England
Burnham-on-Sea (pop. 14,920) is a popular resort town located on the mouth of the Parret, 24mi/39km southwest of Bristol. The town is noted for the beach, mudflats and a collection of lighthouses.

Burnham-on-Sea is also home to the Apex Leisure and Wildlife Park, which offers abundant leisure activities.

Chard, England
Chard (pop. 9,384) is located north of Lyme Regis. The Chard Reservoir has over 150 species of bird with a two mile long trail that runs alongside it.
Chard - Forde Abbey and Gardens
Chard is located west of Crewkerne. Its former Cisterian monastery is surrounded by 30 acres of formal gardens with colorful borders, interesting statues, tiny ponds and mature trees. The walled kitchen garden supplies fresh ingredients for the household and the self service restaurant.

Cheddar, England
Cheddar is a large village at the mouth of the Cheddar Gorge. It is here that "Cheddar Cheese" was originally made and several dairies still survive and are open to the public.

Cheddar is also noted for St Andrew's Church completed in the 14th century and the market cross that dates from the 15th century.

Clevedon Court, England
Clevedon (pop. 14,300) is a quiet seaside resort in a small bay. William Thackeray (1811-63) was a frequent guest at Clevedon Court, where he wrote part of "Vanity Fair" (1848). The Clevedon Court manor was built in 1320, but has an older tower and hall from an earlier building. The journey from Bristol to Clevedon can be made by boat.

Cold Ashton, England
Cold Ashton is in the southern Cotswold and stands at 700 feet above sea level. The village was inhabited as far back as the early 1200's but it's name has been changed in numerous official registers. It was not until 1554 that it was called Cold Ashton.

The local church in Cold Ashton features an oak pulpit with 16th century carved panels. Cold Ashton`s Elizabethan Manor features an elaborate gateway.
Frome, England
Frome (pop. 14,527) is located on the Frome River 20mi/32km southeast of Bristol. The parish church dates from the 13th C with elaborate stained glass.

The first Friday in July is the start of the ten-day Frome Festival featuring over 160 events.

Priddy, England
The small village of Priddy dates back to Roman times, when it was mined for lead. St Lawrence Church was built in the 13th century and restored between 1881 and 1888. The annual Folk Festival and Sheep Fair dates back to 1348.
Thornbury, England
Thornbury was the home of famous W.G. Grace (1848-1915). It also has a fine Perpendicular church, specialty shops on High Street and a market each Saturday.
Warminster, England
Warminster (pop. 15,065) is located at the junction of the A36 and the A350. The town has several parish churches and many outstanding structures from the Late Middle Ages. The River Were runs through Warminster.

Longleat House
(Avon Villages)
To the south of Bradford-on-Avon (17mi/27km) stands a fine Elizabethan country house, Longleat, built between 1559 and 1578, seat of the Marquis of Bath. The house is a remarkable example of English Early Renaissance architecture distinguished by the uniformity of treatment accorded its four facades.

Accumulated over a period of 400 years the rich interior furnishings include elegant 17th and 18th century furniture, silver and porcelain as well as numerous paintings, among the latter being 18th century hunting scenes by John Wootton.

The beautiful park with its serpentine lake, attractive groups of trees and the world's biggest maze, was landscaped by Capability Brown. Also in the grounds are a safari park and a pets' cemetery where animals belonging to generations of the Thynne family lie buried.
The safari park is open daily from mid March - end October. It contains England's only white tiger, giraffes and zebras. It also features the world's longest maze, safari boats, a railroad and an adventure castle.

Westbury-sub-Mendip, England
Bones and flint tools were discovered in the limestone caves above the village of Westbury-sub-Mendip. This is the earliest record of human habitation in the region, and dates back before the last Ice Age. The village is located on the southern slope of Mendip Hills and won Somerset Village of the Year in 2006.
