Arcosanti
The experimental town of Acrosanti began in 1970 and once complete, will house 5000 people, demonstrating ways to improve urban conditions. Italian architect Paolo Soleri founded the Arcosanti project as a testing ground for his theory of arcology, which blends architecture and ecology. The large greenhouses provide gardening space and act as solar collectors for winter heat. The current design allows privacy for residents while also offering many common areas for socializing. Bronze and ceramic windbells, tiles, and sculptures are made and sold on site. The Colly Soleri Music Center at Arcosanti offers performing arts events throughout the spring, summer, and early fall.
