Angra dos Reis Attractions

Angra dos Reis

Bus station: At the Igreja da Lapa

Angra dos Reis lies on the Baía da Ilha Grande in the south-western tip of Rio de Janeiro state, 151km/94mi west of Rio on BR 101 and 98km/61mi north-east of Parati.

The town, lying between the sea and the Serra de Ariró, was founded in the 16th century. It developed rapidly thanks to its harbor, which, like Parati, shipped gold from Minas Gerais and coffee from the Paraíba valley. In recent years Angra dos Reis has achieved a more dubious fame as the site of a controversial nuclear power station. The best situations in the town are occupied almost exclusively by private villas.
