Amherst, Nova Scotia Attractions
30km (19mi) or so beyond Springhill the pleasantly green city of Amherst stands at the "gateway" to Nova Scotia. Amherst evolved from a former Acadian settlement founded in the 17th C beside a Micmac Indian village. When English-speaking colonists took over in 1760 it was renamed after Baron Amherst, the British general who captured Montréal in that year and later became Governor of the U.S. state of Virginia.
Today Amherst is a lively industrial town (e.g agricultural machinery, railway).
One of the architectural highlights of Amherst is the old First Baptist Church.
